The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts Combined Graduation Level examination (CGL) examination every year in three different stages – Tier I, Tier II and Interview. The SSC CGL Tier II examination is scheduled to be held from 30th November 2016 to 2nd December 2016.

SSC CGL Tier II 2016: Exam Pattern

The SSC CGL Tier II will be basically an objective type test with multiple choice questions. The SSC CGL Tier II exam will be conducted in a period of two days:

  1. Paper- I and II both are compulsory for all categories of posts
  2. For the candidates who apply for the post of Statistical Investigator & Compiler, Paper- III is compulsory for those candidates
  3. For the candidates who opt for the post of Compiler and/ or Statistical Investigator Gr. II, they must have possess the required qualification.
  4. For the candidates who apply for the post of Assistant Audit Officer, paper IV is only for those candidates
  5. The candidates who opt for the post of Compiler and/or Statistical Investigator Gr. II and Assistant Audit Officer, they must ensure that they have the qualification required.

This paper basically tests the ability of the students to solve numerical questions. Given below is the scope of the paper:

SSC CGL Tier II 2016: Syllabus: Paper- II: English Language and Comprehension

This paper tests the skills of the candidates related to ‘English Language’. This section is a vital section. The scope of this section in the paper can be:

  • Error spotting questions and Gap fillers
  • Questions related to synonyms and antonyms
  • Detection of mis- spelt words
  • Questions related to 'Idioms & Phrases
  • Questions related to ‘One word substitution’
  • Questions related to ‘Improvement of sentences’
  • Questions from Active/ Passive voice of verbs
  • Direct/indirect speech/ narration
  • Shuffling of parts of a sentence
  • Shuffling of sentences in a passage
  • Cloze passage
  • Comprehension passage.

SSC CGL Tier II 2016: Syllabus: Paper- III: Statistics

The paper III is all about data and its representation in various domains and various forms. This paper will be of 200 marks and will consist of 100 questions. The marks each question would carry is 2 marks and for every incorrect response, 0.50 marks will be deducted from the score. The scope of the paper can be:

  • Data Collection and Representation:  Data collection methods, Distribution of frequencies, etc.
  • Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median and Mode, Partition Values etc.
  • Measures of Dispersion: Relative Dispersion, Common Measures like angle, quartile deviations, Standard Deviation & Mean Deviation.
  • Moments, Skewness and Kurtosis: Skewness and kurtosis: Meaning and Measures; Moments, types and their relationship.
  • Correlation and Regression: Scatter diagram, Simple Correlation Coefficient, Simple Regression Lines, Multiple regression, Multiple and partial correlation (just for three variables only).
  • Probability Theory: Meaning and different definitions of Probability, Compound Probability, Conditional Probability, Independent events and Bayes’ Theorem.
  • Random Variable and Probability Distributions: , Higher moments of a random variable, Expectation and Variance of a random variable, Random variable, Probability functions, Binomial, Poisson, Normal and Exponential distributions, Joint distribution of two random variable.
  • Sampling Theory: Probability and non-probability sampling techniques (simple random sampling, stratified sampling, multistage sampling, multiphase sampling, cluster sampling, systematic sampling, purposive sampling; Concept of population and sample; Parameter and statistics, Sampling and non-sampling errors ;convenience sampling and quota sampling); Sampling distribution (statement only); Sample size decisions.
  • Index Numbers: Meaning of Index Numbers, Problems in the construction of index numbers, Types of index number, Different formulae, Base shifting and splicing of index numbers, Cost of living Index Numbers, Uses of Index Numbers.

SSC CGL Tier II 2016: Syllabus: Paper 4: General Studies

Part A: Finance and Accounting

  • Accounting: Fundamental principles and Basic concepts.
  • Financial Accounting: The Nature and scope of financial accounting, Limitations associated with financial accounting, Basic concepts of financial accounting and its conventions, Accounting Principles (Generally Accepted).
  • Basic concepts of accounting: Single and double entries, Manufacture of goods, Balance Sheet Distinction between Capital and Revenue Expenditure, Depreciation Accounting, Valuation of Inventories, Receipts and Payments and Income & Expenditure Accounts, Accounts of Non-profit organisations, Ledgers (Self Balancing)

Part B: Economics and Governance

  • Constitutional provisions, Roles and responsibilities of ‘Comptroller & Auditor General of India’.
  • Role and functions of the ‘Finance Commission’.
  • Introduction to Micro Economics and Basic Concept of Economics, Limitations of an economy, Production possibilities curve and Methods of economic study.
  • Theory of Demand and Supply, Concept of Elasticity, Price, Income and Cross elasticity, The Theory of consumer’s behaviour-Marshallian approach and Indifference curve approach, Law of supply and Elasticity of Supply etc.
  • Theory of Production and cost, Factors of production, Laws of production – mostly asked are Law of variable proportions 22 and Laws of returns to scale.
  • The popular forms of Market and price determination in different markets.
  • Topics like Indian Economy, Population and its growth, Poverty, Unemployment, Growth, Infrastructure, etc.
  • Various Economic Reforms in India since 1991; Concept of Liberalisation, Privatisation, Globalisation and Disinvestment.
