National Conference to Promote and Develop Tourism, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports Begins in Rann of Kutch

A Three day National Conference to promote and develop Tourism, Culture, Youth Affaiors and Sports organized by the Ministries of Tourism, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports in cooperation with the Government of Gujarat begins today at Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. 
тЧП    The theme of the Conference is “Converging Tourism, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports and Creating Synergy with States and UTs towards building a Resurgent Young India and strengthening Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. 
тЧП    The Chief Guest Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address through a live video conference. Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State (I/C)  for Culture and Tourism, Shri Vijay Goel, Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Vijaybhai R. Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Rajendra Trivedi, Minister of State for Sports, Youth and Culture, Govt. Of Gujarat, Shri Ganpatsinh Vasava, Minister for Tribal Development and Tourism, Govt of Gujarat, Ministers, Secretaries, Senior officers from States and many dignities were present.   
тЧП    Shri Vijaybhai R. Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat launched a “Quiz Competition under Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” on the occasion. A Film entitled “The Making of Rann Utsav” was also screened.
тЧП    The major aim of this conference is to devise a strategic plan between the three important sectors i.e. Tourism, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports through a planned engagement between Centre and States/Union Territories with the prime motto being, “Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat”. 
тЧП    This three day dialogue and discussion will focus on key areas like encouraging and promoting Rural Tourism, Tribal Odyssey, the local fairs and festivals, inter-state sharing of India’s culture, tourism and sports heritage and many other applied areas of opportunities.

Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev on 17 January 2017 was inducted into Legends Club 'Hall of Fame' in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
тЧП    Dev was inducted in presence of former captains Sunil Gavaskar, Nari Contractor and Ajit Wadekar at the Cricket Club of India.
тЧП    Madhav Apte, President of the Legends Club and the former Indian cricketer, presented the honour to Kapil Dev.
тЧП    Kapil Dev captained the Indian cricket team that won the Cricket World Cup in 1983.
тЧП    He is considered as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time.
тЧП    In 2002, Wisden named him as the Indian Cricketer of the Century.
тЧП    Between October 1999 and August 2000, he served as India's national cricket coach.
тЧП    During the 1980s, he developed a fine inswinging yorker, which he used against tail-enders.
тЧП    He was nicknamed as The Haryana Hurricane.
тЧП    He held the world record for the most number of wickets taken in Test cricket. The record was broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000.

Gujarat wins 2016-2017 Ranji Trophy

Gujarat on 14 January 2017 won its maiden Ranji Trophy title. 
тЧП    The team defeated Mumbai by five wickets in the final at the Holkar stadium in Indore.
тЧП    Parthiv Patel’s 143 and Munprit Juneja’s 54 runs helped Gujarat to chase down a score of 265 on the final day.
тЧП    In the semi-finals, Gujarat defeated Jharkhand by 123 runs to reach only their second final in the history of the Ranji Trophy. 
тЧП    Gujarat had previously played in the finals during the 1950–51 Ranji Trophy. 
тЧП    In the second semi-finals, Mumbai beat Tamil Nadu by 6 wickets to progress to their 46th final in the tournament.
тЧП    Gujarat’s Parthiv Patel was declared as the Player of the match for the final.
тЧП    The Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket championship played in India.
тЧП    It is played between teams representing regional cricket associations.

India Rise to 129 in FIFA Rankings, Best Ever Position in a Decade

India jumped six places to the 129th spot, their best football ranking in over a decade, according to world governing body FIFA on Thursday.
тЧП    It is India’s best ever ranking since December, 2005, when they were at the 127th spot. 
тЧП    They have now improved 42 places in less than two years up from 173rd in March, 2015, according to a release.
тЧП    India won nine of their last 11 international matches. A 4-1 win against Puerto Rico, ranked 114, in September last year, has been the highlight of the surge.
тЧП    The top 34 positions remain unchanged with Argentina, Brazil and Germany still holding first, second and third place respectively.
тЧП    National Coach Stephen Constantine said “I think we have had a really good couple of years during my time and while results have been mixed, we have achieved what we said we would. Our ranking is at its highest since 2005 which is obviously great for Indian football.”

Virat Kohli, India’s captain for Test Cricket, on 11 December 2016 became the fifth batsman in the world to score three double-hundreds in a calendar year. 
тЧП    He scored his third double-century in the first innings of the third test match against England.
тЧП    His first double-ton was scored against West Indies, while the second came in Indore against New Zealand. 
тЧП    His third double test-century also made him the first batsman to score a double-century in three successive series in a year. 
тЧП    He is also first Indian to score three double-tons in a year.
тЧП    His score of 235 also became the highest score for an Indian captain in Test cricket. 
тЧП    The previous best score was 224, which was scored by Mahendra Singh Dhoni against Australia in Chennai in 2013.
тЧП    Beside this, Kohli is the only player to have an average of 50+ in all formats of the game.

PR Sreejesh takes charge as Goalkeeping Coach of India Under-21 hockey team

Indian field hockey player PR Sreejesh on 8 December 2016 took over as goalkeeping mentor of the India Under-21 team.
тЧП    The decision was taken when the home team is all set to compete in the Junior World Cup title after a prolonged 15-year wait.
тЧП    Sreejesh, who is the captain of the senior national men’s team, will take charge of the role from South African Dave Staniforth.
тЧП    Staniforth was roped in by Hockey India to work with the junior goalkeepers for a short three-week period keeping in mind the World Cup. He is set to leave for his home nation tomorrow.
тЧП    Born on 8 May 1986, Parattu Raveendran Sreejesh is an Indian field hockey player.
тЧП    He plays as a goalkeeper in the Indian national team and is its current captain.
тЧП    He plays for Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the Hockey India League.
тЧП    In 2004, he made into the junior national team in a match against Australia in Perth.
тЧП    He made his debut in the senior national team at South Asian Games in Colombo in 2006.
тЧП    After India's victory at the 2008 Junior Asia Cup, he was awarded the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
тЧП    His second Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament award came at the 2013 Asia Cup, in which India finished second in the tournament.
тЧП    He was the captain of the team that won the silver medal at the Hero Champions Trophy 2016 held at London.

Haryana sprinter Dharambir Singh banned by NADA

Haryana sprinter Dharambir Singh in the third week of November 2016 was handed an eight-year ban by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
тЧП    The 25-year old runner was earlier stripped of his gold medal won in the 100m race during the National inter-State Championships in 2012 for eluding a mandatory dope test.
тЧП    Dharambir Singh is an Indian male sprinter.
тЧП    In July 2016, he set a new national record for India when he won the 200 metres race at the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru. 
тЧП    His time of 20.45 seconds was under the 20.50 seconds qualifying threshold for the 200 metres race in the 2016 Summer Olympics. 
тЧП    With this, he became the first competitor for India to qualify for the 200 metres at the Olympics in 36 years.
тЧП    On 2 August 2016, he failed to board his flight to Rio de Janeiro, and was reported to have failed a drug test.

India to host T20 World Cup for the blind

India are to host the T20 Cricket World Cup for the Blind at nine different centres from January 31 to February 12 and Pakistan is among the competing teams.
тЧП    The opening game between hosts India and the West Indies is to be held at Delhi.
тЧП    The final is to be conducted in Bengaluru.
тЧП    The tournament, to be organised by the Cricket Association for the Blind in India, is budgeted to cost Rs 24.5 crore.
тЧП    Vengsarkar, invited the organisers to conduct all the matches in Mumbai to be hosted by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), of which he is the vice president.
тЧП    Asked about the presence of Pakistan, Mahantesh said that they will land in Delhi, play matches there and play their remaining matches only in Bengaluru.
тЧП    The other teams in the fray are England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.

BCCI agrees to test DRS from England Test Series

BCCI ended its long-standing opposition to the Decision Review System (DRS), and agreed to its usage on a trial basis during India’s home Test series against England starting next month.
тЧП    The BCCI and India’s limited-overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni have long opposed the system. 
тЧП    But the Board’s stance has softened after Test captain Virat Kohli and coach Anil Kumble expressed their openness to experiment with the technology.
тЧП    India last played a Test series using DRS in 2008 against Sri Lanka.
тЧП    The Board said that it was “satisfied” that most of the concerns and suggestions that were expressed by it over a period of time were “addressed to a significant extent“.
тЧП    The Board said additional cameras have been installed so that there is “redundancy and also provide 100 per cent reliable spin vision for DRS”.
