Ballon d'Or Gala set for France, FIFA World Player in London

Since 2010, FIFA had enjoyed the role of sole proprietor of football’s most prestigious individual award; FIFA merged the two awards into one, leaving its title as the Ballon D’Or, and doing away with the FIFA version.
•    France Football are set to regain control of the Ballon D’Or this year, while FIFA will take care of its own award once more.
•    The Ballon D’Or gala will take place in Paris, its original home until 2010, when Zurich took over as Ballon D’Or HQ.

•    FIFA, meanwhile, are working on getting their own award show ready, with London set to be their location.
•    FIFA President Infantino wants to make the FIFA World Player award the most prestigious award in football.

Cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane awarded Arjuna Award

Sports Minister Vijay Goel conferred Arjuna Awards on cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane at a function in New Delhi. 
•    Sharma was given the award for 2015 and Rahane for 2016.
•    Earlier, the two cricketers could not receive the awards from the President Pranab Mukherjee as they were participating in international tournaments.
•    The Arjuna Awards, instituted in 1961, are given to sportspersons for consistently outstanding performance for four years preceding the year of award and who have also shown qualities of leadership, sportsmanship and a sense of discipline. 
•    The awardees are given a statuette, a certificate, ceremonial dress and award money of 5 lakh rupees.
•    while there’s no doubt that cricket is among the most popular games in India, the current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to promote indigenous and other sports as well.

Sports Ministry to review Rio performance

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Vijay Goel has decided to conduct within the Ministry a thorough review of India’s performance in Rio Olympics, 2016. The process has already begun. 
•    The Minister has written individual letters to each of the athletes who participated in the Rio Olympics, 2016, seeking their feedback and suggestions. He has stated that they should feel free to give him their suggestions or feedback anytime either personally or through mail. In his letter, the Minister has stressed the need for more inputs from performers like them so that the pool of world class athletes can be enhanced and sports infrastructure strengthened. 
•    The Ministry has also written to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to submit their feed-back on India’s performance in Rio Olympics, 2016 and steps for improving the performance in future. Such feedback will also be sought from the National Sports Federations (NSFs). Shri Vijay Goel will have detailed meetings with the IOA and the NSFs shortly in this regard. The objective of this exercise is to analyse India’s performance in Rio Olympics and bring about necessary improvements in future. 
•    The Ministry will also take a look at the duties and responsibilities of various members of the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympics with the purpose of making a fair assessment of their role and taking steps for future improvement. 
•    The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports will be visiting some prominent academies and SAI Centres in the country to have a first-hand knowledge of the facilities available for training of our athletes and improvement required. On 17th of this month, he will visit the Gopi Chand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad where he will meet players, coaches and other support persons. He will also visit the SAI Centre at Hyderabad.

Maharashtra announces Rs. 75 lakh cash reward to Lalita Babar

Maharashtra Government today announced a cash reward of Rs 75 lakh to steeplechase specialist from the state Lalita Babar, who finished a creditable 10th at the Rio Olympics, and Rs 50 lakh to bronze medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik.
•    Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who announced these cash rewards, said the five athletes from Maharashtra who took part in the last months Games will get Rs 50 lakh each.
•    He also gave a cash award of Rs 75 lakh to Olympic silver medallist in womens badminton singles P V Sindhu and Rs 25 lakh to her coach P Gopichand.
•    For the sportpersons who represented India in the (Rio) Olympics and were from Maharashtra, we would like to give a cash award of Rs 50 lakh each to them. 
•    These sportpersons are Ayonika Paul, Prarthana Thombare, Dattu Bhonkanal, Devraj Walmiki and Kavita Raut.

Anjum Chopra becomes First Indian Woman Cricketer to Receive MCC Life Membership

Former Indian women’s team captain Anjum Chopra has been awarded an honourary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) along with former men’s team stalwarts Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag. 
•    She is the first Indian woman cricketer to get the prestigious life membership of MCC.
•    The 39-year-old Anjum played 12 Tests, 127 ODIs and 18 T20 Internationals for India. 
•    She scored 548 runs in Tests with 4 half centuries while in 50 overs format, she scored 2856 runs with a century and 18 half-centuries.
•    Anjum Chopra is an Indian Women Cricketer. She was born in New Delhi. 
•    A sports girl from the start, the first time she stepped on to the ground was at the age of 9. 
•    Played her first friendly match with college girls team at the inter college level scoring 20 runs and taking 2 wickets. 
•    Later the same year she was selected to play for New Delhi in the under −15 tournament

Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt’s London Olympics bronze medal upgraded to silver medal

Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt's bronze medal from the 2012 London Olympics was upgraded to silver on 30 August 2016. The medal was upgraded after second-place finisher late Besik Kudukhov of Russia was stripped off his medal for failing a dope test.
•    As per Russian agency, flowrestling.org, Kudukhov, who had died in a car crash in 2013 in southern Russia, was found to have used a banned substance in a test conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
•    As a result, Yogeshwar, who had bagged a bronze medal in men's 60kg freestyle category in the London Games, has now joined Sushil Kumar as the other silver medallist wrestler from the 2012 Olympics.
•    Besides, Kudukhov, another legendary wrestler, Artur Taymazov (120kg) of Uzbekistan was stripped off from his 2008 gold medal for taking performance enhancing drugs.

National Sports Day was observed across India on 29 August 2016. 
•    The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand who was born on 29 August 1905.
•    On this occasion, President Pranab Mukherjee conferred National Sports and adventure awards on sports person at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
•    Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna: It was conferred on four sports person and they are PV Sindhu (Badminton), Dipa Karmakar (Gymnastics), Jitu Rai (Shooting) and Sakshi Malik (Wrestling).
•    Dronacharya Awards: It was conferred on six sports coaches and they are Nagapuri Ramesh (Athletics), Sagar Mal Dhayal (Boxing), Raj Kumar Sharma (Cricket), Bishweshwar Nandi (Gymnastics), S Pradeep Kumar (Swimming (Lifetime)) and Mahabir Singh (Wrestling (Lifetime)).

Recognising it’s efforts for developing football at the grassroot level, the ‘Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society’ (SMSES) has been bestowed with National Sports Award ‘Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar’, for ‘Sports for Development’ by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. •    Ever since its inception in 1960, the Subroto Cup Football Tournament, named after the first Chief of Air Staff of Indian Air Force, Late Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee OBE, has time and again ventured into unchartered territory to ensure every child is encouraged to play football in the country. Subroto Cup, conducted by the Indian Air Force, is the largest Football tournament for school children with over 35000 Indian and Foreign teams participating each year. The tournament has made a major impact on Indian Football in recent times with increased interest in football in the country. Subroto Cup Football tournament is now recognised as a ‘Game Changer’ and a ‘Bedrock’ for nurturing talent at junior and sub-junior level in the country.
