Javelin Thrower Devendra Gives Second Gold to India in Paralympics

Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia on 14 September 2016 became the first Indian to clinch two gold medals at the Paralympics. 
•    He broke his own world record to clinch the medals at the Rio Games.
•    Jhajharia, who won his previous gold in the 2004 Athens Games, bettered his own world record to finish on top in the men’s F46 event.
•    Born on 10 June 1981, Devendra Jhajharia is an Indian Paralympic javelin thrower competing in F46 events.
•    The first Indian Paralympian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics.
•    He won his first gold in the javelin throw at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, becoming only the second gold medalist at the Paralympics for India.
•    He is currently being supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Para Champions Programme.

Deepa Malik : First Ever Indian Woman to Win a Medal at the Paralympics

Indian athlete Deepa Malik on 12 September 2016 became the first Indian woman to bag a medal at the Paralympics.
Malik clinched a silver medal in the shotput F-53 event. Her throw of 4.61m was the best in her six attempts.
With the win, she confirmed India’s third medal from the Rio Paralympics.
•    Deepa Malik is an Indian athlete born in Sonipat.
•    She is associated with Himalayan Motorsports Association (H.M.A.) and Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (F.M.S.C.I.).
•    She has done an 8 day, 1700-km drive in sub-zero temperatures which included a climb to 18000 feet.
•    She is currently being supported by the GoSports Foundation through their Para Champions Programme.
•    She is a member of the working group in the formulation 12th five- year plan (2012-2017) on Sports and Physical Education as nominated by the Planning Commission HRD Division on behalf of the Sports Ministry.

Indians bag Gold and Bronze in 2016 Rio Paralympics

Mariyappan Thangavelu won India’s first gold medal at the Rio Paralympics. 
•    He won the gold in the Men’s High Jump T-42 event with a leap of 1.89 metres.
•    With this, Thangavelu also became the first Indian high-jumper to win gold at the Paralympics.
•    This was India’s overall third gold at the Games and the first after 12 years.
•    In addition, Bronze in the event also went to India through Varun Singh Bhati, who jumped his personal best of 1.86 metres to finish third. 
•    USA's Sam Grewe bagged the silver medal.
•    India had claimed a Gold and a Bronze at Athens in 2004. 
•    Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia had then won the Gold, with Rajinder Singh claiming the Bronze in powerlifting.
•    In the last edition of the Games in London, India had attained just a Silver. 
•    India had won its first ever Paralympics Gold in the 1972 Heidelberg Games through Swimmer Murlikant Petkar.

IOC Chief given Olympic Movement's highest award

Indian Olympic Committee (IOC) Chief Narayana Ramachandran, was awarded the Olympic Order for outstanding services to the Olympic movement. 
•    Established in 1975, the Olympic Order is the highest award of the Olympic Movement, awarded for particularly distinguished contributions to the movement. 
•    Narayana Ramachandran is an Indian squash administrator who serves as current President of WSF (World Squash Federation). 
•    He was elected on 2008, succeeding Jahangir Khan.
•    He is also, since the 9th of February 2014, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
•    He is the brother of the former Chairman of BCCI and ICC, N Srinivasan
•    The International Olympic Committee is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Lausanne, Switzerland, created by Pierre de Coubertin, on 23 June 1894 with Demetrios Vikelas as its first president. 
•    Today its membership consists of 100 active members, 32 honorary members, and 1 honour member

Athletes given Fair Play Award for Sportsmanship

USA's Abbey D'Agostino and New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin were presented with the Fair Play awards at the Rio Olympics. 
•    Hamblin and D'Agostino tripped and fell to the ground during the 5,000m race, after which D'Agostino helped Hamblin to her feet instead of carrying on with her race. 
•    The two sprinters went on to complete the race together.
•    Speaking of this recognition after the ceremony, 28-year-old Nikki Hamblin said:  “I think it’s very special for both Abbey and myself. 
•    The Norwegian men’s handball team was also honoured for its gracious attitude during a European championship match against Germany earlier this year, which saw them lose out on their Olympic dream. 
•    The match was tied when at the last minute the German team scored a goal. It was discovered that when the goal had been scored an extra player had come onto the field.

10 nations won their first ever Olympic gold in Rio 2016

A total of ten nations won their first ever Olympic gold medal at the recently concluded Rio Olympics, making it the most first-time gold medalists since 1996.
•    Bahrain: Ruth Jebet, born in Kenya but now running for Bahrain, won the women's steeplechase
•    Fiji: The men's rugby sevens team took gold, giving Fiji its first gold in 14 trips to the Summer Olympic Games.
•    Independent: Fehaid Al Deehani became first to win gold in  shooting.
•    Côte d'Ivoire : Cheick Sallah Junior Cisse won gold in taekwondo, the first gold in 14 Olympic Games for Côte d'Ivoire.
•    Jordan : Ahmad Abughaush also prevailed in taekwondo. This was Jordan's 10th trip to the Summer Olympic Games.
•    Kosovo : Majlinda Kelmendi prevailed in women's judo. Kosovo was first recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 2014, so this was its first time at the Summer Games.
•    Puerto Rico: Monica Puig won the women's tennis gold, completing a dazzling run through the field. 
•    Singapore: Joseph Schooling won the men's 100m butterfly, beating Michael Phelps among others. 
•    Tajikistan: Dilshod Nazarov won the men's hammer throw. 
•    Vietnam: Hoang Xuan Vinh in the 10m air pistol gave the Vietnamese their first gold in 15 trips to the Olympic Games.

Sakshi named India's flag bearer for closing ceremony


Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik on 17 August 2016 won bronze in the 58 kg category at the Olympic Games in Rio.
•    With this, Malik brought home India’s first medal of the competition. 
•    With the win, she also became India's firstss female wrestler and the fourth female athlete ever to win an Olympic medal.
•    Born 3 September 1992, Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler.
•    Her first success as a professional wrestler in the international arena came in 2010 at the Junior World Championships where she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg freestyle event.
•    At the 2014 Dave Schultz International Tournament, she won gold in the 60 kg category.
•    She had previously won silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
•    At the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha, she won the bronze medal.

The 2016 Summer Olympics concluded on 21 August 2016 at ceremony held at the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The games featured 28 Olympic sports, including rugby sevens and golf, which were added to the Olympic programme in 2009.
•    The opening ceremony took place in the Maracana Stadium on 5 August 2016.
•    The Games were officially opened by Acting President of Brazil Michel Temer.
•    These were the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach.
•    Rio became the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics.
•    The two new sports for 2016 Olympic Games were golf and rugby sevens.
•    The 2020 Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan.
•    The city was announced as the host at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires on 7 September 2013.
•    The games are planned to be held from 24 July 2020 to 9 August 2020.

Abughaush wins 1st ever Olympic medal for Jordan

Ahmad Abughaush is a Jordanian taekwondo athlete. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the men's 68 kg, where he won the gold medal. 
•    This was Jordan's first ever Olympic medal.
•    Ahmad Abughaush was born in Amman, Jordan. 
•    Abughaush started Taekwondo at a local training center in Amman, his skills qualified him for inclusion in the national team. 
•    In 2010, he participated in the Taekwondo World Championship for juniors that were held in Sharm el-Sheikh, where he was the only Arab athlete to achieve a gold medal. 
•    He participated in a number of championships and was given the best Jordanian athlete award by the Jordan Olympic Committee. 
•    Abugaush took a year off in 2013 after he had suffered a rupture in the Cruciate ligament, he soon returned to training and won gold medals in a number of international championships in 2014

GB Women team won 1st ever women's Olympic hockey gold

Great Britain women's hockey team won its first ever Olympic gold on Saturday, after defeating the defending champions Netherlands in the penalty shootout of the final. 
•    The match had ended at 3-3, after which Britain went on to win 2-0 in the penalty shootout.
