Bopanna and Jeevan win the Aircel Chennai Open

Indian tennis players Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan on 8 January 2017 won the 2017 Chennai Open Men’s Doubles title.
●    The duo defeated compatriots Purav Raja and Divij Sharan 6-3, 6-4 in the summit clash held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
●    It is the first time that an Indian pair clinched the title after Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who won the title in 2011.
●    Rohan Bopanna’s singles career high ranking was World No. 213 in 2007.
●    His career high ranking in doubles was World No. 3 as of July 2013. At present, he is ranked 10th in the world in the doubles rankings.
●    In 2008, he conquered his first ATP doubles title in the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles with Eric Butorac.
●    Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan got his 50th career win at the 2013 ITF Men's Pro Circuit.

Virat Kohli named limited overs Captain

Virat Kohli was named the captain in both limited-overs formats after MS Dhoni stepped down on 4th January.
●    While Dhoni retained his place in both squads, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was named in the T20I squad. 
●    A right-handed batsman often regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world, Kohli was ranked eighth in ESPN's list of world's most famous athletes in 2016.

On 4 January 2017 Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down as the Captain of the Indian One Day International (ODI) and T20I cricket teams.
●    He made his ODI debut in December 2004 against Bangladesh.
●    He played his first Test in 2005 against Sri Lanka.
●    In 2007, he took over the ODI captaincy from Rahul Dravid. 
●    Under his captaincy, India won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the CB Series of 2007–2008, the 2010 Asia Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
●    In June 2013, he became the first captain to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies.
●    He took up the Test captaincy in 2008. 
●    Under his captaincy, Indian team was ranked number one for the first time in the ICC Test rankings in 2009.
●    In 2011, Time magazine included him in its annual Time 100 list as one of the Most Influential People in the World.
●    In June 2015, he was ranked 23rd by Forbes in the list of highest paid athletes in the world.

Indian women win fourth straight SAFF Championship title


India on 4 January 2017 defeated Bangladesh 3-1 to win the 2016 SAFF Women's Championship at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri, West Bengal.
●    With this, India fetched the 4th consecutive SAFF Women's Championship title.
●    The SAFF Women's Championship is also referred to as the South Asian Football Federation Women's Cup.
●    It is governed by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).

●    The Championship is held once in every two years.

Sports Minister Vijay Goel Felicitates Members of World Cup Winner Indian Junior Hockey Team 

Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Vijay Goel hosted here today Indian Junior Hockey Team which recently lifted the World Cup 2016. The winning team led by Harjeet Singh called on the minister at his residence.
●    During the felicitation speech, the Minister announced that each player of the winning team will be individually honoured and presented with an amount of Rs. 3.70 lakh each. The minister said these players should be looked up to as role models for the youth in India and expressed hope that majority of the players will be part of senior team in future to bring further glory to their sporting career. 
●    He said, the entire nation is very proud of them for what they achieved after a gap of 15 years by winning the World Cup. Recalling the victories at Asian Champions Trophy Tournaments prior to the Junior World Cup, Shri Vijay Goel said, it gives us immense pleasure to see that Indian Men, Women and Junior Hockey Teams have performed very well in international competitions in 2016.
●    In the 2016 Junior Hockey World Cup hosted in Lucknow, India overwhelmed Belgium 2-1 to lift the Junior World Cup and became the second team, after Gagan Ajit Singh’s colts in 2001, to get their hands on the most coveted title. This is also the first time that a host nation has won the Cup.
