Peter Gilchrist won the World Billiards Championship

Multiple-time champion Peter Gilchrist added another feather to his cap as he pulled off a one-sided 1500-617 win against Indian national champion Sourav Kothari in the Long-Up Format final of IBSF World Billiards Championshipon Thursday.
тЧП    The Singapore-based champion did not allow Sourav to take lead in any of the visits to the green baize.
тЧП    Gilchrist, literally, knocked Sourav out of contention in his 14th visit when he broke 354 points and then in his next visit scored a 150-break, taking his overall score to 855 against 205.
тЧП    Sourav made a valiant effort to restore pride, but his break of 280 in his 28th visit did not make any difference in the match, with the score reading 588 against Gilchrist's 1299.
тЧП    Gilchrist further extended his lead by posting a break of 110, with the scores at 1409 against Sourav's 588.
тЧП    Gilchrist clinched the final in the 29th visit with a break of 27 points.
тЧП    Earlier, a day after upsetting tournament favourite Pankaj Advani, Kothari got the better of compatriot Dhvaj Haria 1250-816.

MCC Committee recommends limiting bat size edges and red card suspension

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Committee on 7 December 2016 recommended limiting bat size edges and depths along with many other suggestions.
тЧП    The recommendations were made by the MCC’s World Cricket Committee, headed by former England captain Mike Brearley, to bring about a balance between bat and ball.
тЧП    The suggestions were made during a two-day meeting of the committee in Mumbai, which hosts the fourth Test between India and England from 8 December 2016.
тЧП    The committee has come up with a radical proposal of introducing a football-hockey-like red card as punishment for violent acts on the cricket field.
тЧП    It deliberated on the ball-tampering laws, which it felt will remain unaltered.
тЧП    The committee was split vertically on the possibility of reducing Test cricket from a five-day affair to a four-day one.
тЧП    It urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to continue to work towards introducing a World Test Championship and presenting the case for cricket at the Olympic Games and changing the law on ball striking a fielder’s helmet.
тЧП    It was announced that 60% of the world’s professional players supported the decision to limit the bat size to 40 mm on edges and 67 mm for depths, including 7 mm for curvature.

India beats Pakistan to win 2016 Women's Asia Cup

India women’s cricket team on 4 December 2016 defeated Pakistan to win the 2016 Asia Cup T20 at Bangkok, Thailand.
тЧП    India defeated Pakistan in the final of the regional tournament by 17 runs. The win is India’s sixth Asia Cup crown.
тЧП    In the final, India, who remained undefeated during the tournament, batted first and scored 121/5.

Nico Rosberg announces shocking retirement after World title win

In an unexpected move, Nico Rosberg announced his retirement from Formula One on 2 December 2016, just five days after he grabbed his first-ever F1 World Champion title in the season’s final race at Abu Dhabi.
тЧП    The 31-year-old, who beat his Mercedes team-mate and three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton by five points, stated that he was retiring from the sport to spend more quality time with his wife, Vivian and baby daughter, Alaia.
тЧП    This is the first time that a reigning world champion has decided to quit the sport. Last time something similar happened was in 1993 when Alain Prost announced his retirement after winning his fourth driver’s title.
тЧП    He is the son of former F1 world champion, Keke Rosberg, who won the title in 1982.
тЧП    He won the 2005 GP2 series for the French motor racing team, ART
тЧП    He made his F1 debut at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2006 for Williams, his father’s old team.
тЧП    He raced for the team from 2006- 2009 and then joined Mercedes from 2010 until 2016. 
тЧП    He raced in 206 Grand Prix competitions and has 23 Formula one wins and 30 Formula one pole positions to his name. 
тЧП    He is also the fourth driver in the history of Formula one to win the Monaco Grand Prix thrice in a row and to have 7 consecutive Grand Prix wins.
тЧП    He has also won the Lorenzo Bandini Trophy in 2011, FIA Pole Trophy in 2014 and DHL Fastest Lap.

Russia remains banned from athletics

Russia's ban from global athletics will continue until at least February.The country has been banned from competition by the sport's world governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), since November 2015 over state-sponsored doping and missed the Rio Olympics.
тЧП    The head of the IAAF taskforce set up to assess Russia's anti-doping progress revealed that, although the country had made progress towards the conditions of their readmission to the international fold, they were still not ready to return.
тЧП    There are no major athletics championships before February.
тЧП    In the meantime, Russian athletes can still apply to the IAAF doping review board to compete if they can demonstrate they have undergone a testing system, as the US-based long jumper Darya Klishina did successfully for the Rio Games.
тЧП    The ban has led to Russian athletes missing the Olympics in Brazil and its current extension means the bulk of them will also likely miss the March 3-5 European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

Argentina beats Croatia to win their first Davis Cup title

Argentina lifted their first Davis Cup title after Juan Martin Del Potro and Federico Delbonis won Sunday’s reverse singles to complete the South American nation’s spectacular comeback in a 3-2 victory over hosts Croatia in the final.

Sachin Singh wins Gold at Youth World Boxing Championships

Sachin Singh on 27 November 2016 became the third Indian boxer to bag gold medal at the AIBA Youth World Championships. 
тЧП    In the summit clash at St Petersburg, Russia, Sachin recorded a stunning unanimous victory over Cuban national champion Jorge Grinan in the 49kg weight class.
тЧП    Sachin defeated his rival 5-0 to record a rare Indian triumph over a Cuban boxer. 
тЧП    16-year-old Sachin has joined Thokchom Nanao Singh (2008) and Vikas Krishan (2010) in the Indian youth world championships gold club.
тЧП    With this, India finished the tournament with one gold and a bronze. 
тЧП    Naman had settled for a bronze Tanwar in the 91 kg after losing in the semifinal. In 2014 edition, India was able to secure just a bronze medal.
тЧП    After this win, the newly-formed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced a cash prize for the two medalists. 
тЧП    It announced Rs one lakh for Sachin and Rs 25000 for Naman.

Olympic Champion Eliud Kipchoge Wins Delhi Half Marathon

As expected, Eliud Kipchoge, Kenya’s reigning Olympic marathon champion bagged the winner’s title in Delhi Half Marathon on 20 November 2016. While he was declared winner in men’s category, Ethiopia’s Worknesh Degefa claimed the women’s title. 
тЧП    Kipchoge, who won the gold medal at Rio Olympics in August 2016, is considered to be one of the greatest marathon runners of all times. 
тЧП    The race was flagged off by Union Sports Minister, Vijay Goel and Adille Sumariwalla, President of Athletics Federation of India and Council member of IAAF. The race witnessed participation from nearly 34000 people spread across different categories. 
тЧП    Kipchoge completed the 21.097km course in 59:44, unable to beat the course record of 59:06 set by Ethiopia’s Guye Adole in 2014.  
тЧП    While Ethiopia’s Yigrem Demelash came in second with a very close timing of 59:48, Augustine Choge from Kenya finished third with 60:01.
тЧП    In the women’s category, while winner Degefa finished first with a timing of 1:07:42, fellow Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh came in second with a timing of 1:07:52 and Kenya’s Helah Kiprop came third with 1:08:11.

IOC Strips 10 athletes of their Olympic Medals

The International Olympic Committee stripped ten athletes of their medals from 2008 Olympics. The move came after these athletes were tested positive for various banned steroids during the retest of their samples from the games.
тЧП    Among the ten athletes, nine belong to former Soviet Union countries.
тЧП    None of them were gold medalists.
тЧП    Three were silver medalists: Wrestlers Vitaly Rahimov and Khasan Baroev from Azerbaijan and Russia respectively and weightlifter Irina Nekrasova from Kazakhstan.
тЧП    Two were bronze medalists: Triple jumper Chrysopigi Devetzi from Greece and pole vaulter Denys Yurchenko from Ukraine.
тЧП    These results take the total of weightlifting medalists tested positive for banned substances in 2008 Olympics to 22. 
тЧП    Apart from them, six athletes who did not win any medal during the 2008 games were also disqualified. 
тЧП    One among the disqualified six is Russia’s Elena Slesarenko-women’s high jump gold medalist in 2004- who came fourth in 2008 games and Ukraine’s Vita Palamar, who came fifth.
