Before you start solving CLAT previous year question papers, you should know how many questions come from each section. This helps you plan your 2 hours in the exam. The total number of questions has changed over the years, so we have divided the papers into three groups.

CLAT PYQ with 120 Questions (2024 to 2026)

The CLAT question papers from 2024 onwards have 120 questions. This is the pattern you will see in CLAT 2027.

Note one small change here: in CLAT 2026, Logical Reasoning got 2 extra questions and Legal Reasoning lost 2. The same year, Logical Reasoning was also the hardest section of the paper. So prepare this section well.

CLAT Question Papers with 150 Questions (2020 to 2023)

The CLAT question papers from 2020 to 2023 had 150 questions each. The split was roughly: English – 30, Current Affairs & GK – 35, Legal Reasoning – 40, Logical Reasoning – 30, and Quantitative Techniques – 15. The exact numbers changed by one or two questions each year, so always check the paper you are solving.

CLAT Question Papers with 200 Questions (2008 to 2019)

The old CLAT question papers had 200 questions with a very different pattern: English – 40, GK & Current Affairs – 50, Elementary Maths – 20, Legal Aptitude – 50, and Logical Reasoning – 40. These papers asked direct questions that tested your memory, not your reading. Today's exam is passage-based, so use these old papers only for extra practice. CLAT 2008, the first paper, was slightly different from the rest.

CLAT Previous Year Papers: Year-Wise Difficulty Level (2020–2026)

CLAT 2026 (7 Dec 2025) — Moderate, with a big surprise in Logical Reasoning

English was easy with 5 reading passages, GK was the easiest section to score in, and Maths stayed simple. But Logical Reasoning shocked everyone. Instead of the usual passage-based questions, the paper had puzzle-type questions — blood relations, arrangements, sequences, and coding-decoding. Students who had only practised the 2021–2025 papers had never seen such questions in CLAT.

Lesson for you: CLAT can change the style of any section without warning. So practise papers from different years, not just the latest one.

CLAT 2025 (1 Dec 2024) — Easy paper, but with a hard lesson

The paper itself was easy — simple passages and high scores everywhere. But the official answer key had mistakes. Students challenged it, the matter went to court, and the results were changed after many months.

Lesson for you: always check your answers with the final answer key, not the first one. And if you are sure your answer is right but the key says something else, check the reasoning — students who did this actually got the results changed.

CLAT 2024 (3 Dec 2023) — Easy to moderate; the new pattern started here

This was the first paper with 120 questions — exactly 1 minute per question. A few questions were removed later after students raised objections. This is the oldest paper that matches today's exam exactly.

Lesson for you: make this your first full timed paper.

CLAT 2023 and 2022 — Moderate; the 150-question papers

These papers were not hard question-by-question. They were hard because of the reading load — 150 questions in 2 hours means only 48 seconds per question.

Lesson for you: solve these papers to build reading stamina. And don't worry if you run out of time — these papers had 30 more questions than today's exam.

CLAT 2021 and 2020 — Where the new CLAT began

CLAT 2020 was the first passage-based paper, and it shocked students who had prepared for the old pattern. CLAT 2021 was easier and more scoring.
