Vaishnav Hegde Wins Gold in South Asian Aquatic Meet

Vaishnav Hegde, an ace swimmer from Puttur Aquatic Club, bagged a gold for India in the 50m breastroke at the South Asian Aquatic Championship (SAAC) in Colombo.
тЧП    This SAAC swim championship has top swimmers from SAARC nations. 
тЧП    Vaishnav clocked 29.31 to clinch the gold. 
тЧП    Jashandeep Singh of India who clocked 29.60, bagged second and third was Kiran Jayasinghe from Sri Lanka.
тЧП    Vaishnav qualified for this event by winning the silver in the 70th Glenmark national swimming championship held at Ranchi last month.
тЧП    Vaishnav is also the youngest among 10 swimmers from India who met the qualifying standards for the Asian Swimming Championship to be held in Tokyo.
тЧП    Vaishnav is also the youngest swimmer with the 3rd highest FINA points in India with 766 points for his 50m breastroke.

Sania Mirza, ended 2015 as the top-ranked doubles player in the world with partner Martina Hingis.

тЧП    The 29-year-old completed a total of 80 weeks as the top-ranked player – the tenth-highest number of weeks as the WTA No. 1 doubles player. 
тЧП    The all-time record rests with American legend Martina Navratilova, who yesterday celebrated her 60th birthday. 
тЧП    Widely considered among the greatest players of all time, Navratilova won a staggering eighteen Grand Slams in the singles, 31 in the doubles.
тЧП    Mirza, who initially started out in the singles and is considered one of India’s finest ever players, is the highest-ranked doubles player in Indian women’s history and was the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title.

India Signs up for Second Russian Akula Class Nuclear Attack Submarine

In a deal reportedly worth close to $2 billion, India is set to acquire a second Akula 2 nuclear-powered attack submarine from Russia.
тЧП    The contract for this, which has been unannounced so far, was finalised in Goa along with a slew of other defence deals worth more than $5 billion which have been made public.
тЧП    According to Alexei Nikolski, a columnist with the reputed Russian daily Vedomosti, "According to a source in the Russian defence industry, the long discussed lease to transfer a multipurpose Project 971 nuclear submarine to India from the Russian Navy was signed in Goa."
тЧП    The Indian Navy already operates an Akula 2 class nuclear submarine, INS Chakra (formerly known as K-152 Nerpa), which was leased from Russia and commissioned on April 4, 2012 after India paid for its completion and sea-trials.

MakeMyTrip acquires Ibibo - creates largest travel group in the country


Online travel firm MakeMyTrip will acquire rival ibibo in an equity deal that will create one of the leading travel groups in India. 
тЧП    South Africa's Naspers and China's Tencent Holdings are selling ibibo Group to MakeMyTrip in exchange for an issuance of new shares by MakeMyTrip, the company said in a statement.
тЧП    MakeMyTrip went public on NASDAQ in 2010.
тЧП    Upon closing of the transaction, MakeMyTrip will own 100 percent of ibibo Group. 
тЧП    Naspers and Tencent will become the single largest shareholder in MakeMyTrip, owning a 40 percent stake and will contribute proportionate working capital upon closing. 
тЧП    Additionally, prior to closing, a $180 million, 5-year convertible notes issued by MakeMyTrip to Ctrip.com International Ltd in January 2016 will also be converted into common equity, resulting in Ctrip having an approximately 10 percent stake in the combined entity.    
тЧП    The transaction is expected to close by the end of December 2016 and is subject to approval by MakeMyTrip shareholders and regulatory approvals.

Centre Proposes 4 GST Slabs

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on 18 October 2016 reached a consensus on the way the states would be compensated for any loss of revenue after implementation of the new indirect tax regime, GST from 1 April 2017.
тЧП    During the meet, the GST Council also discussed the possible GST rates, including a four-slab structure of 6, 12, 18 and 26 with lower rates for essential items and highest band for luxury goods.
тЧП    The three-day GST council meet was headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and included representatives from all states. 
тЧП    Base year for calculating the revenue of a state would be 2015-16
тЧП    Secular growth rate of 14 per cent would be taken for calculating the likely revenue of each state in the first five years of implementation of the GST.
тЧП    States getting lower revenue would be compensated by the Centre.
тЧП    They reached at a consensus on definition of revenue to compensate states for revenue loss due to GST implementation.

India Invites Pak to Disaster Mitigation Meet

India has invited Pakistan for a disaster risk reduction conference to be held in Delhi in November. But Pakistan is yet to confirm its participation.
тЧП    In all, 61 countries have been invited, and 38 have so far confirmed their participation.
тЧП    The Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction will be held from November 3 to 5. 
тЧП    A senior official said close to 4,000 delegates from across the country and 1,500 foreigners would take part in the conference.
тЧП    Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the preparations. 
тЧП    An official said the conference was a step towards establishing India’s supremacy in the region in effectively handling disasters.

Orbital ATK's Antares Rocket Launched for the first time after '14 Blast

Orbital ATK on Monday launched its Antares rocket en route to the International Space Station for the first time since a massive explosion after liftoff two years ago.
тЧП    The new Antares 230 rocket propelled an unmanned cargo capsule, called Cygnus, toward the orbiting outpost carrying 5,100 pounds (2,300 kilograms) of supplies, food and science experiments.
тЧП    The first and second stage portion of the rocket separated about five minutes after the launch as planned, and the Cygnus cargo ship reached orbit shortly after, according to a live broadcast of the launch on NASA television.
тЧП    It is scheduled to berth at the space station early on Sunday, October 23.
тЧП    After the Cygnus is unloaded, astronauts will repack it with trash from the space station. 
тЧП    The spaceship will unlatch from the ISS in a month and burn up on re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
тЧП    The previous Antares rocket exploded in a fireball on October 28, 2014 just seconds after liftoff, destroying the cargo capsule and damaging the launch pad.

Second Joint tactical Exercise held by Indian and Chinese army in Ladakh┬а

As part of the ongoing initiative to enhance interaction and cooperation between India and China, under the provisions of Border Defense Cooperation Agreement, 2013, the Indian and Chinese armies held Second Joint Exercise “Sino India Cooperation 2016” today, as a sequel to the first Joint Exercise held on 06 Feb 2016 in the area of Border Personnel Meeting Hut at Chushul Garrison of Eastern Ladakh, along with Chinese troops of Moldo Garrison.
тЧП    During the day long exercise on Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) a fictitious situation of earthquake striking an Indian Border village was painted. Thereafter joint teams carried out rescue operations, evacuation and rendering of medical assistance.
тЧП    The Indian Team for the exercise was led by Brigadier RS Raman and that of the Chinese was led by Sr Col Fan Jun. 
тЧП    The exercise was a great success and has not only refined the drills to provide succor to the border population in case of natural calamity but has also increased the level of trust and cooperation between the two border guarding forces along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.
тЧП    The joint exercise, compliments the Hand in Hand series of the India -China joint exercises and the effort of both the nations to enhance cooperation and maintain peace and tranquility along the border areas of India and China.

The logo of the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) was launched today by the Commerce & Industry Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. 
тЧП    On the occasion she said that this is an ambitious task as India’s intellectual property related activities need great traction.
тЧП    The logo has been designed keeping in mind the slogan of the National IPR Policy: “Creative India, Innovative India”. While the logo stands for “Cell for IPR Promotion and Management”, the letters “I” and “P” have been stylized to represent “Intellectual Property” as well.
тЧП    The letter “I” stands for Intellectual, and is represented by a pencil, denoting the expression of creativity, and in the tri-colours of the Indian flag. The curve of the letter “P” stands for Property, and is denoted by a gear which depicts Innovation and Industry.
тЧП    Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) has been created as a professional body under the aegis of DIPP to take forward the implementation of the National IPR Policy that was approved by the Government in May 2016, with the slogan – “Creative India; Innovative India”
тЧП    CIPAM is working towards creating public awareness about IPRs in the country, promoting the filing of IPRs through facilitation, providing inventors with a platform to commercialize their IP assets and coordinating the implementation of the National IPR Policy in collaboration with Government Ministries/Departments and other stakeholders.
