G Balakrishna, Bengaluru water tanker driver, crowned Mr Asia 2016

G Balakrishna in October 2016 won the Mr Asia title at the 5th Phil-Asia bodybuilding championships in the Philippines. 25-year-old Balakrishna is a Bengaluru-based water tanker driver.
тЧП    In 2013, he won Mr Universe Under-24 junior contest in Germany
тЧП    In 2014, he won Mr Universe title in the same category at the world championship in Athens
тЧП    He joined the water-tanker business in 2010 in Whitefild, Bengaluru to supplement his income as a gym instructor.

Cyrus Mistry ousted as Tata Sons chief; Ratan Tata returns in interim

The board of Tata Sons Ltd on 23 October 2016 replaced Cyrus Mistry as Chairman of the India’s largest conglomerate and named his predecessor Ratan Tata as the interim chairman for four months.
тЧП    No reason was given for removing Mistry, but it is believed there were differences over management style and his approach of selling assets after writing them down.
тЧП    Mistry, 48, who replaced Tata, 78, as chairman in December 2012, was only the sixth group Chairman in nearly 15 decades and the first from outside the Tata family. He will remain a director of the individual companies, though his tenure as Chairman is the shortest so far at the group.
тЧП    Besides, the board also named a five-member search committee, which includes Tata, to choose a successor within four months. The other members of the committee include TVS Group head Venu Srinivasan, Amit Chandra of Bain Capital, former diplomat Ronen Sen and Lord Kumar Bhattacharya. All of them, except Bhattacharya, are on the board of Tata Sons.
тЧП    The Committee has been constituted with a mandate to complete the process in four months. Also, there will be no change at the level of CEOs in the operating company.
тЧП    Tata will be interim head of the group while a Selection Committee appointed by the company searches for a replacement.

North Korea's women's U-17 team wins the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup

North Korea's women's U-17 team on 21 October 2016 won the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. The North Koreans defeated Japan in penalty kicks to grab the title.

Expectations from the Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in New Delhi next month┬а

The Government of India is hosting the first Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) after the advent of the Sendai Framework for DRR (SFDRR). 
тЧП    The SFDRR (2015-2030) was adopted by at the Third World Conference on DRR at Sendai in Japan in March, 2015. It is the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda and identifies targets and priority action areas towards reducing disaster risk - 'reducing the damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of prevention'. While listing governments as primary stakeholders, it also calls for shared responsibility with others including local governments and the private sector. 
тЧП    The AMCDRR, scheduled to be held from November 3-5, 2016, at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi will pave the way towards implementation of this Framework in the Asian region. It will also devise a mechanism for monitoring its progress. 
тЧП    Participating stakeholders, including governments, Non-Governmental Organisations, academia, civil society, volunteers, among others, would make actionable commitments arrived at through collaboration, consultation and partnership amongst all. 
тЧП    The Conference will adopt the ‘Asian Regional Plan for Implementation of the Sendai Framework’. Taking the Sendai Framework forward, which clarifies the ‘What’ that needs to be done at all levels to reduce disaster risk, this Plan will focus on the ‘How to’ at national and local levels. It will devise a longer term roadmap of cooperation and collaboration, spanning the 15-year horizon of the Sendai Framework, as well as a two-year action plan to further disaster risk reduction with specific, actionable activities. 
тЧП    Other outcomes will include the New Delhi Declaration, which will spell out the commitment of participating governments towards preventing and reducing disaster risk, and strengthening the resilience of communities, nations and the Asian region. 
тЧП    Besides these, stakeholder groups will also come up with action statements aimed towards a ‘shared responsibility’ approach in implementation of the SFDRR. 
тЧП    Established in 2005, the AMCDRR is a biennial conference jointly organized by different Asian countries and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

Milan confers honorary citizenship on Dalai Lama


The Milan city council on 20 October 2016 bestowed honorary citizenship on the Dalai Lama. However, China has strongly opposed another award given to him.
тЧП    Lamberto Bertole, Chairman of the Council of Milan, honoured the Dalai Lama with the Milan Honorary Citizenship award at a ceremony held at the Arcimboldi Theatre in Milan, Italy.
тЧП    The 14th Dalai Lama is the current Dalai Lama.
тЧП    Dalai Lamas are important monks of the Gelug school, the newest school of Tibetan Buddhism, which is nominally headed by the Ganden Tripas.
тЧП    His enthronement ceremony as the Dalai Lama was held in Lhasa on 22 February 1940.
тЧП    He eventually assumed full temporal duties on 17 November 1950, at the age of 15, after China's invasion of Tibet.
тЧП    During the 1959 Tibetan uprising, the Dalai Lama fled to India, where he currently lives as a refugee.
тЧП    The 14th Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

Police Commemoration Day observed across India


The Police Commemoration Day was observed on 21 October 2016 across India. 
тЧП    The Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories held in January 1960 decided that 21 October will be observed as Commemoration Day in all Police Lines throughout India to mark the memory of these gallant personnel.
тЧП    Home Minister Rajnath Singh laid wreath and paid homage to the police martyrs at Police Memorial Ground, Chanakyapuri in Delhi.
тЧП    The day commemorates the sacrifices of ten policemen while defending the borders with China in 1959.
тЧП    On 21 October 1959, Chinese Army personnel opened fire and threw grenades at the police party of 20 personnel.
тЧП    Ten of them died, seven were taken prisoners by the Chinese and the remaining managed to escape.
тЧП    Since 1961, more than 33000 police personnel have sacrificed their lives for security of the nation and service to the society.

Mumbai among 15 global cities in terms of total wealth held


India's financial hub Mumbai has been named among top 15 cities globally in terms of total wealth held, while London topped the list.
тЧП    According to New World Wealth, the wealthiest cities in the world are London with USD 2.7 trillion of total wealth.
тЧП    New York City (USD 2.6 trillion) and Tokyo (USD 2.2 trillion) in the second and third place respectively.
тЧП    Mumbai featured on the 14th place in the list with a total wealth held in the city worth USD 820 billion.
тЧП    Home to 45,000 millionaires and 28 billionaires, Mumbai is the economic hub of India. It is also home to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
тЧП    Others in the list include San Francisco Bay area at the fourth place with a total wealth of USD 1.9 trillion; Beijing (5th, USD 1.8 trillion); Shanghai (6th, USD 1.6 trillion).
тЧП    Other countries are Sydney, Toronto, Frankfurt, Paris.
тЧП    'Total wealth' refers to the private wealth held by all individuals in a country.

Indian physician Dr. Ketan Desai appointed as chairman of the World Medical Association

The top global medical ethics body, World Medical Association (WMA), appointed an Indian doctor facing corruption charges as its president.
тЧП    Taiwan held its annual meeting in the WMA & announced Dr Ketan Desai was appointed Chairman of the Association.
тЧП    He delivered the inaugural address as president in Taiwan. In 2013 WMA after assurance claim against Dr. Desai's by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) from the a president removed the suspension.
тЧП    WMA's annual meeting held in Taiwan where more than 40 national medical associations were present.
тЧП    He will remain chairman of the Association for 2016/17.
тЧП    Dr. Desai has also been the Chairman of IMA.

NTPC to set up 50-MW solar projects in Andaman & Nicobar

State-owned power firm NTPC will set up solar projects totalling 50 MW with battery storage system at different locations in Port Blair in Andaman & Nicobar.
тЧП    A memorandum of understanding among NTPC, the Andaman & Nicobar administration and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to this effect was signed on October 20, 2016. 
тЧП    The power generated from these solar plants is expected to contribute to higher renewable energy deployment and greening of A&N islands.
тЧП    NTPC group’s total installed capacity stands at 47,228 MW, which includes 800 MW of hydro and 360 MW of solar generation capacity.

тЧП    Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar appointed India's first female Olympic wrestler Geeta Phogat as police superintendent on October 20, 2016.
