Mercedes racing driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain on 12 June 2016 won the Formula 1 Canada Grand Prix title.
•    To win the title, he overcame Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel in the final race held in Montreal, Canada.
•    For Hamilton, the present win in Montreal was the fifth in his career and the second in a row. His previous titles were secured in 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2015.
•    In the 2016 season, it was the second title for him as he already secured the Monaco Grand Prix on 29 May 2016.
•    Overall, he has more race victories than any other British driver in the history of Formula One and is currently third on the all-time wins list, with 45 wins.
•    He is a British Formula One racing driver from England.
•    He currently races for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team.
•    He is the 2008, 2014 and 2015 Formula One World Champion.
•    In his first season in Formula One, he set numerous records while finishing second in the 2007 Formula One Championship.
•    He won the World Championship the following season, becoming the then-youngest Formula One world champion in history before Sebastian Vettel broke the record two years later.

The Indian men's 4x400m relay team on 12 June 2016 created a new national record, clocking 3:02.17 at the International Sprint and Relay Teams Cup at Erzurum, Turkey.
The team improved the previous record of 3:02.62 set at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.
On the other hand, the Indian women's 4x400m relay team clocked 3:30.16 and jumped to world No 12 in the rankings. In the 2016 South Asian Games, the women's relay team finished the race with a timing of 3:35.44 to win the gold. They also recorded their fastest time of 3:29.08 in the 2016 IAAF World Championships which took place in Beijing.
•    The 4×400 metres relay or long relay is an athletics track event in which teams consist of four runners who each complete 400 metres or one lap.
•    It is traditionally the final event of a track meet.
•    Relay race runners typically carry a relay baton which they must transfer between teammates.
•    Runners have a 20 m box in which to transfer the baton.
•    Unlike the 4 × 100 m relay, runners in the 4 × 400 typically look back and grasp the baton from the incoming runner.
•    Internationally, the U.S. men's team has dominated the event, but have been challenged by Jamaica in the 1950s and Britain in the 1990s.

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal on 12 June 2016 won the women’s title of the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament. In the final match played at Sydney, Saina defeated Chinese Sun Yu 11-21, 21-14, 21-19.
•    With this win, she also pocketed a cheque of 56250 US dollars.
•    This was first title of year 2016 for 29-year-old Saina and second Australian Open title of her career. She won her first Australian Open title in 2014.
•    Besides, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) announced a reward of 10 lakh rupees for Saina Nehwal for winning the Australian Open Super Series badminton tournament.
•    On the other hand, Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus won the men’s Australian Open Badminton Super series titles. 
•    Vittinghus defeated South Korean Jeon Hyeok-Jin to win his first Super series title.

Opener Lokesh Rahul created history when he became the first Indian to score a hundred on One-Day International debut. 
•    Overall, he became the 11th player to achieve the feat on debut.
•    Karnataka batsman Rahul took 115 balls to reach the landmark as he steadily carried India beyond the finish line, chasing 169 for a win in the first ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare. 
•    His knock was studded with seven fours and a mighty six that was also the winning runs for the visiting side.
•    India began their chase with two debutant openers in Rahul and Karun Nair. 
•    The visitors were jolted early as Nair threw away his wicket playing a rash shot in the fifth over.
•    Ambati Rayudu joined Rahul and the two slowly but steadily carried forward as the pair put on an unbeaten 162-run partnership to see India home. Rahul remained not out on 100 while Rayudu scored an unbeaten 62.

International Master Visakh NR of Tamil Nadu broke a nine-year jinx to lead an Indian sweep in the Ninth Mumbai Mayor International Open chess tournament at Mount Litera School International, BKC.
•    The 17-year-old drew his final round match with GM Diptayan Ghosh, and was tied for the top place on eight points with Ghosh and Chandigarh’s Gusain Himal.
•    The arbiters declared Visakh champion on a better tie-break as he drew with GM Diptayan Ghosh, the mutual decision coming after 16 moves. 
•    Visakh is the first Indian to win this prestigious event in its nine-year history.
•    The game between Visakh and Ghosh started with a Queen's Indian and turned into a Dutch Defence. 
•    On the 9th move Ghosh sacrificed a pawn on d5 for better play but both players did not take any risk and agreed for a draw in just 16 moves. 

Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra was on Friday chosen as the flag bearer of the Indian contingent at the Rio Games’ opening ceremony on 5 August 2016.
•    The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed that they have chosen the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medalist as the country’s flag bearer for the quadrennial extravaganza.
•    Bindra will be making his fifth Olympic appearance this year.
•    Alongside star boxer Vijender Singh, tennis legend Leander Paes and decorated grappler Sushil Kumar, Bindra’s name was under consideration prior to the 2012 London Games too, before the IOA gave the honor to the double Olympic medalist wrestler.
•    He is till date India’s only individual gold medalist at the Olympics.
•    The usually reserved shooter achieved the feat when he clinched a historic gold in 10-metre air rifle event at the Beijing Games in 2008.
•    He is the Winner of numerous medals at top international competitions including World Championships, World Cups, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
•    He is also one of the goodwill ambassadors of the Indian contingent for the Rio Games .

Maria Sharapova was suspended for two years from Tennis by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) on 8 June 2016 for using a prohibited drug. 
•    She will remain under suspension for two years, commencing on 26 January 2016.
•    The Russian tennis sensation was provisionally banned in March 2016 after testing positive for meldonium at Australian Open in January 2016.
•    Meldonium is a metabolic modulator that is included under section S4 (Hormone and Metabolic Modulators) of the 2016 WADA Prohibited List, and therefore is also prohibited under the Programme.
•    Sharapova will serve a period of ineligibility of two years.
•    Due to her prompt admission of her violation, that period of ineligibility should be back-dated under Article 10.10.3(b) of the Programme to commence from 26 January 2016 (the date of sample collection) and so should end at midnight on 25 January 2018.
•    Her results at the 2016 Australian Open should be disqualified, with resulting forfeiture of the ranking points and prize money that she won at that event.
•    The Tennis Anti-Doping Programme applies to all players competing at Grand Slam tournaments and events sanctioned by the ITF, ATP, and WTA. 

World number one Novak Djokovic on 5 June 2016 won 2016 French Open title. In the final clash in Paris, Djokovic defeated Britain's Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
•    It was Djokovic's first French Open title and 12th major title of his career. Other 11 titles include six Grand Slam titles from the Australian Open, three from Wimbledon and two from the US Open. Among men, only Roger Federer (17), Rafael Nadal (14) and Pete Sampras (14) own more.
•    With this win, he also became the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at once. The 29-year-old also becomes the third man ever to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, joining American Don Budge and Australian Rod Laver in a quite remarkable feat.
•    Djokovic was born on 22nd  May 1987 in Belgrade, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to parents Srđan and Dijana .
•    His two younger brothers, Marko and Djordje, are also tennis players with professional aspirations.
•    Residing in Monte Carlo, Djokovic was coached by former Slovak tennis player Marián Vajda from 2006 until Boris Becker took over the role of Head Coach in December 2013. 
•    Djokovic is a self-described fan of languages, speaking Serbian, English, French, German and Italian.

Garbine Muguruza won grand slam title with a 7-5 6-4 win over the world number one Serena Williams and defending champion in the French Open final.
•    The 22-year-old fourth seed, who lost to Williams in last year’s Wimbledon final, became the first Spaniard to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1998.
•    It was Muguruza’s first final on the slow surface and she relied on a powerful first serve.
•    In the fourth game, which lasted nine minutes, Muguruza saved a break point with an unreturnable forehand, then a second with an ace.
•    Garbiñe Muguruza Blanco is a Venezuelan-born Spanish professional tennis player. 
•    Muguruza is the 2016 French Open champion. 
•    Her other career highlights include her maiden title at the 2014 Moorilla Hobart International, the 2015 China Open, and reaching the final of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. 
Muguruza achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 2 and doubles ranking of world No. 10 in June 2016 and February 2015 respectively.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) unveiled its first ever team of refugees which will have 10 members and 12 officials and will compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games under the Olympic flag.
•    The team includes five athletes from South Sudan, two from Syria, two from Democratic Republic of Congo and one from Ethiopia.
•    These refugee athletes have no home, no team, no flag, no national anthem. 
•    The invention of this refugee team is to give them a home in the Olympic village together with all the athletes around the world.
•    The athletes, six men and four women, will compete in the sports of swimming, judo and athletics.
•    They include swimmer Yusra Mardini from Syria who trains in Germany, South Sudanese middle distance runner Rose Nathike Lokonyen, living in a refugee camp in Kenya, and democratic Republic of Congo judoka Yolande Bukasa Mabika, training in Brazil.
•    The Olympic anthem will be played in their honor, the Olympic flag will lead them into the stadium.
•    It can send a symbol of hope for all refugees in the world and can send a signal to the international community that refugees are our fellow human beings and are enrichment to society.
•    The team will be housed in the athletes‘ village along with all other national teams and will enter the stadium as the penultimate team at the opening ceremony, ahead of the host nation.
•    “They will show to the world that despite the unimaginable tragedies they have faced, anyone can contribute to society through talent, skills and the strength of human spirit,” said Bach.
•    The plight of those fleeing conflict, as well as economic migrants escaping poverty, has polarized opinion in Europe, with the amount of new arrivals stretching the European Union’s asylum system.
•    The IOC had said it wanted to draw the world’s attention to the plight of refugees.
