Paes-Hingis won Mixed double French Open 2016

Veteran Indian tennis star Leander Paes with Swiss partner Martina Hingis won over compatriot Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig at Roland Garros.
•    The unseeded Indo-Swiss pair scored 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over the second seeds in the summit clash that lasted one hour and 28 minutes.
•    42-year-old Paes had won Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles in 2015 with Hingis.
•    Martina Hingis and Leander Paes hold the trophy after winning the mixed doubles final of the French Open. 
•    It was 18th Grand Slam title for Paes and 10th in the mixed doubles. 
•    For Hingis, it was Grand Slam title number 22nd and fifth trophy in the mixed doubles.
•    Hingis and Paes broke Sania immediately with Paes hitting a volley winner on Sania's return on the second breakpoint.
•    Hingis struggled with her first serve but managed to hold for team's 5-3 lead.

Nita Ambani first Indian women nominated for International Olympic Committee

Nita Ambani, founder-chairperson of Reliance Foundation, has been nominated as an independent candidate to be a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
•    The election for membership, is scheduled at the 129th IOC Session at Rio de Janeiro between August 2 and August 4. 
•    She will continue to serve as a member of the IOC until she reaches 70 years of age.
•    IOC President is Thomas Bach.
•    Among Indians, Ambani will be the first woman and the third individual to become a member of the IOC after the late Sir Dorabji Tata and Raja Randhir Singh.
•    Ambani spearheads all of Reliance Industries' initiatives in sports, notably cricket, football, basketball, kabaddi, tennis and golf, either through the company, the foundation or its joint ventures.
•    Sports is also an important component at the 13 schools overseen by her - which educate more than 15,000 students - and at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the Reliance Foundation.

Zimbabwe coach and captain sacked

Zimbabwe has axed their coach Dav Whatmore and captain Hamilton Masakadza just days before the arrival of India for a five-match limited-overs tour.
•    Zimbabwe Cricket cited the team’s poor performance at this year’s World Twenty20 tournament where they failed to make it out of the preliminary stage.
•    Former Australian Test batsman Whatmore, who coached the country of his birth Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996, was handed a four-year contract in April last year.
•    He will be replaced on an interim basis by former South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini.
•    Head coach Davenell Whatmore has had his contract terminated with immediate effect. Bowling coach Makhaya
•    Ntini has taken over in an acting capacity until the appointment of a substantive head coach. 
•    The board has also relieved Zimbabwe top-order batsman Hamilton Masakadza of the captaincy for all three formats of the game. His deputy, Graeme Cremer, will act in the interim.
•    Zimbabwe have also signed former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener as a batting coach for two years.
•    Zimbabwe played against India in three one-day internationals in Harare starting on June 11, as well as two Twenty20 games.

Sandhu 1st Indian to play in European Laegue

Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu etched his name into Indian football’s history book after becoming the first player in the history of the nation to play in a game in the top division of a European league. 
•    The former East Bengal star achieved the feet as he was named in Norwegian side Stabaek’s starting line-up for their Tippeligaen game against Start.
•    However, this week, Gurpreet made history when he was named a starter in Stabaek’s starting eleven in a bottom of the Norwegian league clash against Start. Thus, after waiting for nearly two long years, Gurpreet finally got his break.
•    The 6’6” keeper’s start was made even sweeter as he kept a clean sheet as his side romped home to a 5-0 win. 
•    The win helped Stabaek pull away from the bottom and they now stand only a point away from getting out of the relegation zone at the midway point of their season.

Alastair cook became youngest player to reach 10,000 Test runs

Alastair Cook achieved a fabulous milestone as he broke Sachin Tendulkar's record and became the youngest to reach 10,000 runs in Tests on the fourth day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Durham.
•    Cook became the first England player to reach the landmark of 10,000 runs and he also became the youngest at 31 years and 158 days to achieve the landmark. 
•    Tendulkar was 31 years and 326 days old when he reached the landmark against Pakistan at Eden Gardens in 2005.
•    The England skipper became the 12th batsman overall to reach the milestone and he achieved it in his 128th Test.
•    Alastair Nathan Cook, MBE (born 25 December 1984) is an English cricketer.

Weir sets world record in 1 mile wheelchair race

Paralympian David Weir made world history by becoming the first wheelchair race to complete a mile in less than three minutes on Sunday.
•    Posting a time of two minutes and 57 seconds, Weir shaved six seconds off his previous best performance at the Westminster Mile
•    Six-time gold medalist Weir said after the race: "I've always said I could do it.
•    Sunday's victory was Weir's fourth consecutive Westminster Mile title, beating South African rival Ernst.
•    Wheelchair racing is the racing of wheelchairs in track and road races. 
•    Wheelchair racing is open to athletes with any qualifying type of disability, amputees, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and partially sighted (when combined with another disability). 
•    Athletes are classified in accordance with the nature and severity of their disability or combinations of disabilities.
•    Like running, it can take place on a track or as a road race. 
•    The main competitions take place at the Summer Paralympics which wheelchair racing and athletics has been a part of since 1960.

Sunrisers Hydrabad won their maiden IPL title

Sunrisers Hyderabad clinched the 2016 IPL title by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. The Hyderabad unit successfully defended 209 runs even after fifties from Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli for RCB. 
•    In a battle between IPL's best batting and bowling line-ups, the Orange Army came up trumps despite initial blitzkrieg from Chris Gayle and Kohli, defending their total of 208 for seven by restricting the home team to 200 for seven.
•    It was David Warner's batting and astute captaincy complemented by some inspirational death overs bowling by Mustafizur Rahaman (1/37 in 4 overs) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0/25 in 4 overs) that clinched the issue. 
•    Warner, who hit 69, finished second in run-getters' list with 848 runs.
•    The turning point certainly would be the 24 runs that Ben Cutting (39 no and 2/35) got in the final over off Shane Watson's bowling during Sunrisers innings and then came back to dismiss a rampaging Gayle.
•    Gayle (76 off 38 balls) and skipper Kohli (54 off 35 balls) had a scintillating opening stand of 114 in 10.3 overs as it looked like a cakewalk for the home team.
•    Stuart Binny hit Mustafizur down the ground for a six as the equation came down to 37 from 3 overs.
•    But Bhuvneshwar bowled a brilliant 18th over keeping everything in the blockhole as only 7 came off the over.
•    Out of the thirteen team that have played in the Indian Premier League, three have won it twice, while three have won it once each. 
•    The Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams in league's history. 
•    The other three teams who have won the tournament are the Deccan Chargers,Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Asian Games discus throw gold medal winner Seema Punia got qualified for the Rio Olympics with a 62.62m effort at the Pat Young's Throwers Classic 2016 at Salinas (California) in the United States.
•    She won the gold in the event and in the process pipped 2008 Olympic discus throw champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton of United States of America for the gold.
