Ashok Chawla is new Yes Bank Non-Executive Part time Chairman

Former finance secretary and Competition Commission of India chairman Ashok Chawla has taken charge as Non-Executive Chairman of Yes Bank from today. 
●    Chawla took over after non-executive part-time Chairperson Radha Singh completed her tenure as the bank's director yesterday, Yes Bank informed the stock exchanges. 
●    A former IAS officer, Singh was non-independent director on the bank's board since April 2008 and was appointed chairperson in 2014. 
●    In March this year, Chawla was appointed additional non executive director on the bank's board. 
●    He was to be appointed as non executive chairman of the bank after the end of Singh's term, the bank had then informed the bourses.

TRAI to Recommend Neutral Public Wi-Fi Infra to Govt

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said the country had too few Wi-Fi hotspots and will soon recommend that a neutral Wi-Fi infrastructure be deployed to bridge the digital divide, among other steps needed to improve broadband connectivity. 
●    In regions like the US, UK, and France, there are millions of Wi-Fi hotspots but in India, it is just 35,000. 
●    TRAI had suggested to the government that the BOOT model be adopted for its Bharat Net strategy with active participation from entrepreneurs to operate, use and market the network, besides utilising cable TV infrastructure for speedier broadband penetration. 
●    100 million cable TV homes carry 10 Mbps or more bandwidth, then we can have a reliable broadband infrastructure.
●    TRAI floated a consultation paper on the matter in July, with comments sought until August 24, and responded to them by September 7

Dominka Cibulkova defeated top-ranked Angelique Kerber by 6-3, 6-4 to win the WTA Finals title.
●    Kerber had won their last five meetings, but now their head-to-head stands at 5-5.
●    Dominika Navara Cibulkova is a professional Slovak tennis player currently ranked world No. 5 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).
●    She has won eight WTA singles titles and two on the ITF tour.
●    Cibulková has reached the quarterfinals or better of all four Grand Slam tournaments. 
●    In 2016, she won the WTA Finals in her first appearance at the tournament.

New Ross Sea Protected Area now World's Largest

The Ross Sea, a deep bay of the Southern Ocean in Antarctica, was declared as world’s largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) on 28 October 2016. 
●    With this, there will be a blanket ban on commercial fishing across about three quarters of that area for 35 years.
●    It will be the world's largest marine protected area and covers 1.6 million square kilometers.
●    The agreement comes after years of negotiations brokered by the UN's Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.
●    Environmentalists have welcomed the move to protect the Earth's most pristine marine ecosystem.
●    The Ross Sea is a deep bay of the Southern Ocean in Antarctica, between Victoria Land and Marie Byrd Land.

●    V Adimurthy came to the Team Indus office in Bengaluru for the first time in 2013. 
●    As the resident intellectual of the Indian Space Organisation (ISRO), he had been instrumental in working out the mathematical aspects of its missions for four decades. 
●    It was mainly his calculations that formed the basis for the moon and mars missions, and he still provides important intellectual inputs for ISRO missions. 
●    In 2013, Team Indus was a group of young space enthusiasts who had been working for three years to develop a spacecraft to land and rove on the moon, as part of the Google X Prize Lunar Challenge. 
●    They had no experience in space technology. But they had a plan, and they wanted Adimurthy to take a look.

India China NSAs to meet Next Week

Indian National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi will meet next week to discuss New Delhi's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG) and boundary talks.
●    Besides blocking India's admission into the NSG, China had put a second technical hold on New Delhi's move to bring about a UN ban on Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar.
●    India has been pressing China to relent on its opposition, saying that vast majority of the 48 member group back India's case.
●    China is opposing India's membership on the ground that New Delhi is not a signatory to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
●    Pakistan has said India getting membership of the NSG will affect security in South Asia and derail "global non-proliferation".

6 lakh SBI customers to get new Debit Cards

Over six lakh customers of State Bank of India (SBI) will get new debit cards soon.
●    BankS have moved swiftly to contain the damage caused by a recent malware-related security breach.
●    The move has been dubbed the biggest card replacement exercise in the history of Indian banking. 
●    Over 6.29 lakh cards have been dispatched already.
●    A total of 95.5% of the blocked cards were dispatched by October 26. 
●    SBI had blocked over 6 lakh cards following a malware-related security breach in a non-SBI ATM network. 
●    32 lakh cards from 19 different banks were hit by the breach. 
●    Not all banks, however, blocked their customers' cards, but instead sent out messages to change the ATM PIN immediately .

Astronauts return from 115 day ISS Mission

Three astronauts landed safely in Kazakhstan on Sunday following a 115-day mission aboard the International Space Station, including US astronaut Kate Rubins, the first person to sequence DNA in space.
●    They were then taken to a nearby medical tent for initial examination.
●    Molecular biologist Rubins and Onishi were both returning from their first missions in space, while flight commander Ivanishin undertook a five-month mission at the ISS five years ago.
●    Their journey back to Earth marks the first complete mission to and from the orbital lab for a new generation of Soyuz spacecraft with upgraded features.
●    Andrei Borisenko and Sergey Ryzhykov of Russia and NASA astronaut Robert Shane Kimbrough remain on board the space station.
●    The space laboratory has been orbiting Earth at about 28,000kmph (17,000 miles per hour) since 1998.

SBI to allot shares to Govt for Capital Infusion

Country’s largest lender SBI on Saturday said it will issue equity shares on preferential basis to the government for capital infusion of Rs 5,681 crore.
●    The bank has also sought approval from government and RBI to increase the issued capital by raising additional equity share capital up to Rs 5,681 crore by way of preferential issue to the government.
●    State Bank of India (SBI) is an Indian multinational, public sector banking and financial services company. 
●    It is a government-owned corporation with its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra. 
●    The company is ranked 232nd on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world's biggest corporations as of 2016.
●    As of 2014–15, the bank had 191 overseas offices spread over 36 countries.

Diwali commemorated for the first time at UN

Diwali was commemorated for the first time at the United Nations, with the world body's imposing headquarters lit up especially on the occasion of the Indian festival of lights.
●    The facade of the UN headquarters was lit in bright hues and the words 'Happy Diwali', along with the image of a traditional 'diya', projected onto the building.
●    The UN Secretariat building will be lit up for Diwali from 29-31 October.
●    It is for the first time that the Indian festival of lights is celebrated at the world body after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in December, 2014 that acknowledged the "significance of Diwali".
●    From 2016 onwards, Diwali was made an optional holiday for the UN, India's Permanent Mission to the world body said in a special video message.
●    Earlier in June, the UN building was lit up on the occasion of the International Yoga Day, with images of Yoga postures projected on the imposing headquarters.
