Prime Minister to lay foundation of first ever Indian Institute of Skills in India at Kanpur Tomorrow┬а

In line with his vision of making India the Skill Capital of the World by empowering its youth to be more employable and self-sustainable, Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of the first ever “Indian Institute of Skills” in the country at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The Institute has been conceptualized by Shri Narendra Modi during his visit to Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education. 
тЧП    Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in partnership with the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore has decided to open an institute first ever of its kind in the country, the institute is inspired by the Singapore model of training and would adopt various best practices from the country. The Ministry has decided to have six such institutes 
тЧП    The event is being organized in the presence of Governor of Uttar Pradesh Shri Ram Naik, Union Minister of State(I/C) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Shri Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister of Panchayati Raj, Uttar Pradesh Shri Ram Govind Chaudhary and MPs Dr Murli Manohar Joshi and Shri Bhole Singh. 
тЧП    MSDE also has plans to felicitate skilled candidates who have been trained under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (RPL) in Kanpur where the Hon’ble Prime Minister himself will distribute skill certificates to Street Food Vendors, Leather industry Workers under the recognition of prior learning program of the government. 
тЧП    This program helps in assessment of the existing work experience of a person and certifies him on his current skill-set basis the National Skill Qualification Framework approved by both the industry and the government of India.

Vijay Sharma formally assumes office as LIC Chairman

Vijay Kumar Sharma on Friday assumed charge as Chairman of the nation's largest financial powerhouse Life Insurance Corporation.
тЧП    The Government had on Wednesday appointed Sharma, who was named Acting Chairman on September 16, as the head of the state-run life insurer, where he will have a five-year term.
тЧП    Sharma, a Managing Director, was given the role of Acting Chairman when incumbent S K Roy was relieved of his duties. 
тЧП    Roy had resigned in June, nearly two years ahead of his term. He was appointed in June 2013 by the previous Congress-led UPA Government.
тЧП    A post-graduate in science, Sharma joined LIC as a direct recruit officer in 1981. 
тЧП    Before he was promoted as a Managing Director in 2013, he held important positions as executive director of pension & group schemes, zonal manager in-charge of Southern zone. 
тЧП    He also helmed LIC Housing Finance, an arm of the insurance behemoth.

India to contribute $500,000 to UN emergency response fund

India has said it will contribute $500,000 to the United Nations’s emergency response fund for the year 2016-17 as it stressed that the international response is falling significantly short of the challenges posed by humanitarian crises across the world.
тЧП    Counsellor in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN Anjani Kumar said at the high-level Pledging Conference that the Government of India would be contributing $500,000 to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for the year 2016-17. 
тЧП    India’s cumulative contribution to the fund so far has been $6 million.
тЧП    The scale and instances of humanitarian crises around the world has been on the rise and the need for assistance to meet the challenges these crises pose has been unparalleled.
тЧП    The number of people requiring urgent humanitarian assistance worldwide has quadrupled over the past 10 years and the international humanitarian response is falling significantly short of the challenges posed.

Qatar abolishes тАШkafalaтАЩ system


Qatar on Monday formally announced the end of its controversial “kafala” system, arguably the biggest ever labour reform undertaken by the host of the 2022 football World Cup.
тЧП    In a long-expected announcement, Labour Minister Issa bin Saad al-Jafali al-Nuaimi said the “kafala” rules would be abolished from December 13. 
тЧП    The system was compared to modern-day slavery and left vulnerable workers with little protection and open to abuse, critics said.
тЧП    Freedom of movement is guaranteed under the new rules, said Qatari officials, including giving workers the right to change jobs.
тЧП    Any workers mistreated will automatically be allowed to change jobs. 
тЧП    The exit visa formally needed to leave the country under “kafala” will be abolished, although workers will still need their employers' permission to go home.
тЧП    An appeals committee has been established for expats who are denied permission to leave, and that committee will begin work.

Junior Hockey World Cup: India claimed title

For the second time this year, Harjeet Singh's junior Indian men's hockey team beat Belgium on the way to lifting a trophy; this one, however, was the biggest prize of all.
тЧП    In its first such final in 15 years, India overwhelmed Belgium 2-1 to lift the 2016 Hockey Junior World Cup at Lucknow's Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium on Sunday and become the second team, after Gagan Ajit Singh's colts in 2001, to get their hands on the most coveted title.
тЧП    On the biggest day for Indian junior men's hockey since the class of 2001 claimed the Junior World Cup, Harjeet's dominating Indian team was put ahead within minutes when Gurjant Singh stunningly knocked one past Belgium goalkeeper Loic van Doren to give the colts a much-needed boost and an early lead. 
тЧП    This win maintained India's 100% record in the tournament and underlined their status as rightful winners.
тЧП    Belgium, having stunned six-time champions and defending champions Germany 4-3 in a shoot-out in the semi-finals, were overawed in the initial passages of their first Junior World Cup final.

Malabar Exercise - India, Japan, US to focus on anti-submarine warfare

India, Japan and the US are set to focus on "anti-submarine warfare" by deploying "different machines" during the next round of their marine wargames named the Malabar Exercise, amidst increasing presence of Chinese underwater vessels in the strategic Indian Ocean region. 
тЧП    The three countries will come together in the Indian Ocean for the 21st edition of the Malabar exercise - Malabar 2017, aiming for a "bigger" and "more complex" exercise than before.
тЧП    Vice Admiral Aucoin met Indian Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lamba and other senior officers to chalk out the dates and strategy of the exercise, likely to be held after the monsoon. 
тЧП    Vice Admiral Aucoin, who spoke on a number of issues, said he was looking forward to the implementation of the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement between India and the US. 
тЧП    The US commander also spoke out against militarisation of the strategic South China Sea region, through which an annual trade of USD 5 billion flows.

16 December : Vijay Diwas commemorated

December 16 in India is celebrated as 'Vijay Diwas' to mark India's victory over Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. 
тЧП    The day is also celebrated to honour the martyrs of the 1971 war between the two countries. The Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 which began on December 3 lasted for 13 days and officially ended on December 16, after which Pakistan surrendered to India.

тЧП    The war stripped Pakistan of more than half of its population and with nearly one-third of its army in captivity

Majuli to become India's first ever carbon neutral district

Assam’s island district, Majuli will now become India's first ever Carbon neutral district by 2020.
тЧП    The project titled ‘'Sustainable Action for Climate Resilient Development in Majuli' was launched by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, A K Johari on 14 December 2016. 
тЧП    It was initiated by Assam’s department of Environment and Forest to fight against climate change and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
тЧП    District is located towards the east of Assam’s largest city – Guwahati. 
тЧП    District was formed due to change in the course of Brahmaputra and its tributaries. 
тЧП    The sole mode of transportation that connects the district to the mainland is ferry service. 
тЧП    Over the period, the district has modernised, especially with the setting up of medical centres and educational institutions.
тЧП    Carbon neutrality refers to achieving net zero carbon footprint by removing as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as the amount released into it.

Rio de Janeiro accorded UNESCO World Heritage Status

The UN cultural body UNESCO has accorded world heritage status to Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.  
тЧП    It has been registered as “Carioca Landscapes between Mountain and Sea” on the UNESCO world heritage list. 
тЧП    Rio de Janeiro has been accorded this status in recognition of its extraordinary fusion of manmade and natural beauty, soaring granite cliffs, urban rainforest and beaches. 
тЧП    It also had hosted 2014 football World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics. 
тЧП    The UNESCO status to Rio de Janeiro was announced in 2012. 
тЧП    The UNESCO World Heritage Sites are sites having special cultural or physical significance. 
тЧП    The list is maintained by international World Heritage Programme administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana launched

Union Government on 15 December 2016 launched Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana to promote digital payments in the country. 
тЧП    These schemes are aimed at increasing the overall transparency in the economy and removing the influence of cash on the political and economic system.
тЧП    Under these schemes, government will be giving cash awards to consumers and merchants who utilize digital payment instruments for personal consumption expenditures. 
тЧП    The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) will be the implementing agency of these schemes. 
тЧП    The primary aim of these schemes is to incentivize digital transactions so that electronic payments are adopted by all sections of the society, especially the poor and the middle class. 
тЧП    It has been designed keeping in mind all sections of the society and their usage patterns.
тЧП    The schemes will become operational with the first draw on 25 December 2016 and will lead up to a Mega Draw on Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti on 14 April 2017.
