Majuli to become India's first ever carbon neutral district
Assam’s island district, Majuli will now become India's first ever Carbon neutral district by 2020.
● The project titled ‘'Sustainable Action for Climate Resilient Development in Majuli' was launched by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, A K Johari on 14 December 2016.
● It was initiated by Assam’s department of Environment and Forest to fight against climate change and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
● District is located towards the east of Assam’s largest city – Guwahati.
● District was formed due to change in the course of Brahmaputra and its tributaries.
● The sole mode of transportation that connects the district to the mainland is ferry service.
● Over the period, the district has modernised, especially with the setting up of medical centres and educational institutions.
● Carbon neutrality refers to achieving net zero carbon footprint by removing as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as the amount released into it.
असम सरकार ने माजुली द्वीप को देश का पहला कार्बन मुक्त जिला बनाने की परियोजना शुरू की है।
● माजुली में एक बैठक में अपर प्रधान मुख्य वन संरक्षक एस.के. जौहरी ने इस परियोजना की घोषणा की।
● परियोजना में जलवायु परिवर्तन की समस्या से निपटने और ग्रीनहाउस गैसों के उत्सर्जन में कमी लाने पर ध्यान दिया जाएगा।
● यह परियोजना फ्रांसिसी विकास एजेंसी की सहायता से असम के वन विभाग द्वारा कार्यान्वित की जा रही है।
● परियोजना को लागू करने के लिए मांजुली के उपायुक्त की अध्यक्षता में एक जिलास्तरीय समिति का गठन किया गया है।
● माजुली या माजोली असम के ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के मध्य में बसा एक बड़ा नदी द्वीप है।
● गुवाहाटी - जिला असम के सबसे बड़े शहर के पूर्व की ओर स्थित है।
● जिला ब्रह्मपुत्र और उसकी सहायक नदियों में परिवर्तन के कारण का गठन किया गया था।
● मुख्य भूमि को जिले से जोड़ता है एकमात्र नौका सेवा।
● अवधि के दौरान, जिले का आधुनिकीकरण किया गया है, विशेष रूप से चिकित्सा केन्द्रों और शैक्षिक संस्थानों की स्थापना के साथ।
