Donald Trump sworn-in as 45th US President

Donald Trump was sworn-in as the 45th President of the United States on 20 January 2017. He was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice John Roberts.
●    In the ceremony, Trump placed his left hand on two bibles including the historic Abraham Lincoln Bible and recited the oath of the office to become the most powerful man on this Earth.
●    With this swearing-in, Trump took over the reins from Barack Obama amid expectations of radical change in policies and apprehension at home and abroad.
●    Apart from Trump, Mike Pence was also sworn-in as the Vice President of the United States. He took the oath of the office before Trump.
●    The oath-taking ceremony was held in front of about 8 lakh people who visited the National Mall in the centre of the capital to celebrate the occasion.

Adama Barrow sworn in as President of Gambia in Senegal

Adama Barrow on 19 January 2017 was sworn in as the third President of The Gambia at a ceremony in the Gambian embassy in Dakar, Senegal.
●    With the swearing in ceremony comes an event that marked The Gambia’s first change of presidency in 22 years. 
●    It is also the first change of presidency by democratic means since independence from Britain in 1965.
●    Barrow had won the 2016 Gambian presidential elections that were held in The Gambia on 1 December 2016.
●    Soon after the inauguration of Barrow in neighbouring Senegal, troops from a bloc of West African countries have entered Gambia in support of him.
●    Adama Barrow is a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
●    He served as the treasurer of the UDP and operated a real estate agency, before winning the presidential elections.
●    A coalition of seven opposition parties chose him as their endorsed candidate for the 2016 presidential election.

Alok Kumar Verma appointed as CBI Director

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on 19 January 2017 approved the appointment of Alok Kumar Verma as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). 
●    Verma succeeded Anil Sinha, who retired from his office on 2 December 2016. 
●    Alok Kumar Verma, currently Delhi Police commissioner, is a 1979 batch Indian Police Service officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre. 
●    This appointment of Verma as the CBI director is his 24th posting in a 36-year long career as a police officer.
●    He had also served as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Puducherry and the Inspector General of Police in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Punjab Royals wins Pro Wrestling League Season 2

NCR Punjab Royals on 19 January 2017 were crowned the champions of the Pro Wrestling League Season 2.
●    The Punjab Royals triumphed over Haryana Hammers 5-4 at the K D Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
●    The winners were presented with the Champions trophy along with a prize money of Rs. 1 crore and 90 lacs. The runners up were awarded the prize money of Rs. 1 crore and 10 lacs.
●    About Pro Wrestling League
●    The Pro Wrestling League (PWL) is the initiative of ProSportify and Wrestling Federation of India.
●    The first season of this league was among 6 city-based teams. Around 66 wrestlers from different countries of the world took part in the Season One.
●    There are six teams who compete in the League. Each team consists of a total of 1 Icon and 8 other players. Among them, there are 5 Indians and 4 foreign players. They consist of 5 men and 4 women.
●    The six teams for the Season 2 were: Haryana Hammers, NCR Punjab Royals, Mumbai Maharathi, Jaipur Ninjas, Colors Delhi Sultans, UP Dangal.
●    There are 5 weight categories (57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg, 97 kg, 125 kg) for men, and 4 weight categories (49 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 69 kg) for women.
●    Revanta Mumbai Garuda was the winner of the Pro Wrestling League Season 1.

A Three day National Conference to promote and develop Tourism, Culture, Youth Affaiors and Sports organized by the Ministries of Tourism, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports in cooperation with the Government of Gujarat begins today at Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. 
●    The theme of the Conference is “Converging Tourism, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports and Creating Synergy with States and UTs towards building a Resurgent Young India and strengthening Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. 
●    The Chief Guest Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi delivered the inaugural address through a live video conference. Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State (I/C)  for Culture and Tourism, Shri Vijay Goel, Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Vijaybhai R. Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Rajendra Trivedi, Minister of State for Sports, Youth and Culture, Govt. Of Gujarat, Shri Ganpatsinh Vasava, Minister for Tribal Development and Tourism, Govt of Gujarat, Ministers, Secretaries, Senior officers from States and many dignities were present.   
●    Shri Vijaybhai R. Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat launched a “Quiz Competition under Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” on the occasion. A Film entitled “The Making of Rann Utsav” was also screened.

Ministry of AYUSH and Advertising Standards Council of India sign MoU

In order to curtail malpractices in the advertisement of AYUSH drugs, the Ministry of AYUSH has signed a MoU with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). 
●    Addressing the cases of misleading advertisements with respect to Ayurveda, 
●    Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy drugs, treatments and related services, ASCI will comprehensively monitor these advertisements across print and electronic media. 
●    The MoU was signed by  Advisor (Ayurveda), Ministry of AYUSH Dr, Dinesh Chan Katoch and Chairman, ASCI Shri Srinivasan K Swamy in the presence of Secretary AYUSH Shri Ajit M Sharan at New Delhi.
●     ASCI has been given a self-monitoring mandate by the Ministry of AYUSH to identify potentially misleading advertisement in the AYUSH sector and process complaints through its Consumer Complaints Council (CCC). 
●    The Ministry of AYUSH will also redirect complaints against misleading advertisements they receive, to the ASCI, which will be reviewed using ASCI’s code and guidelines. 
●    The MoU also requires ASCI to report to the Ministry of AYUSH, all advertisements in potential violation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 and Rules thereunder as well as non-compliance of ASCI’s CCC recommendations for the Ministry of AYUSH to take further action.

Kapil Dev inducted into Legends Club’s Hall of Fame

Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev on 17 January 2017 was inducted into Legends Club 'Hall of Fame' in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
●    Dev was inducted in presence of former captains Sunil Gavaskar, Nari Contractor and Ajit Wadekar at the Cricket Club of India.
●    Madhav Apte, President of the Legends Club and the former Indian cricketer, presented the honour to Kapil Dev.
●    Kapil Dev captained the Indian cricket team that won the Cricket World Cup in 1983.
●    He is considered as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time.
●    In 2002, Wisden named him as the Indian Cricketer of the Century.
●    Between October 1999 and August 2000, he served as India's national cricket coach.
●    During the 1980s, he developed a fine inswinging yorker, which he used against tail-enders.
●    He was nicknamed as The Haryana Hurricane.
●    He held the world record for the most number of wickets taken in Test cricket. The record was broken by Courtney Walsh in 2000.

The first Raisina-Dialogue 2017, a flagship conference on Geopolitics and Geo-economics began in New Delhi. 
●    The three day conference is joint initiative of Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Observer Research Foundation (ORF), an independent think tank based in India. 
●    The geo-political conference was attended by over 250 delegates from 65 countries.

J&K Legislative Assembly passes resolution on return of Kashmiri Pandits back to Kashmir

The Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir on 19 January 2017 passed a resolution on return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits and other migrants back to Kashmir valley. 
●    The resolution was passed unanimously in the house.
●    Various members of the assembly also rendered their full support to the motion. 
●    They said with the improvement in situation government should facilitate the return and rehabilitation of Kashmir migrants who have to shun their places due to militancy.
●    The issue of return of Kashmiri Pandits was raised in the assembly by the leader of opposition Omar Abdullah. 
●    The former Chief Minister of the state said that the Assembly should pass a resolution that calls for the return of Kashmiri Pandits along with other migrants.
●    Calling for the resolution, Abdullah also said that 27-years-ago, unfortunate circumstances in the state forced Kashmiri Pandit community, along with Sikh community and few Muslims to the migrant.
