Justice Mudgal to head FIFA governance committee

World governing body for football, FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) on 14 May 2016 appointed Justice (retd) Mukul Mudgal as deputy chairman of its Governance Committee.
•    Portuguese Luis Miguel Maduro, Advocate General of European Court of Justice (ECJ), was appointed as the Chairman of the Governance Committee.
•    Justice Mudgal was also appointed as the head of the FIFA’s first Independent Review Committee along with Luis Miguel Maduro.
•    Mudgal is the former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana and headed the IPL spot-fixing probe. He was also involved in overseeing the conduct of international cricket matches and IPL games at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. The inclusion of justice Mudgal to FIFA’s is being seen as a major development for Indian football and judiciary.
•    The decision to appoint Jutice Mukul Mudgal was taken at the 66th FIFA Congress which was held at the Mexico City.
•    The Committee has been set up to protect the organisation against any conflict of interest in the approval of any appointments to the key committees and bodies.

Fatma Samoura named first female secretary general of FIFA

On 13 May 2016 FIFA Council named a Senegalese UN diplomat Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura as its first female Secretary General (SG).
Samoura, 54-year-old, will assume the role of FIFA Secretary General before mid-June after undergoing an eligibility check administered by an independent review committee. 
The announcement was made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the 66th FIFA Congress in Mexico City.
•    Samoura is a 21-year veteran of United Nations programmes who is currently the UN’s Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria.
•    Fatma is a woman with international experience and vision who has worked on some of the most challenging issues of our time.
•    Since starting her UN career as a senior logistics officer with the World Food Programme in Rome in 1995, Samoura has served as country representative or director in six countries, namely Djibouti, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Madagascar and Nigeria.
•    She speaks French (her mother tongue), English, Spanish and Italian.
•    Prior to joining the UN, Samoura spent eight years in the private sector, working in the fertiliser trading sector for Senchim, a subsidiary of Industries Chimiques du Senegal.

Shashank Manohar unanimously elected as Independent ICC Chairman

On 12 May 2016 Shashank Manohar got elected as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) by the Board.
•    Manohar is the first elected independent Chairman of the Cricket governing body and will serve for two-year term with immediate effect.
•    He resigned from the post of President of Board for Control of Cricket in India on 10 May 2016.
•    ICC directors were allowed to nominate one candidate till 23 May 2016
•    ICC Council It comprises 10 full members, 38 associate members and 57 affiliate members
•    The role of Chairman is an honorary one.
•    Shashank is a prominent Indian lawyer who served his first stint as the BCCI President from 2008-2011. 
•    He was re-elected as the BCCI President in October 2015 
•    The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the international governing body of cricket. 
•    It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from England, Australia and South Africa, renamed the International Cricket Conference in 1965, and took up its current name in 1989.

Manjit Singh, appointed as member of President's Advisory Council

On 12 May 2016 US President Barack Obama appointed an Indian-American engineer, Manjit Singh, as the member of President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
The announcement came along with several other appointments made by the US President.
•    Singh is the President of Agilious, a software technology consulting firm he founded in 2013.
•    He is the co-founder of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national Sikh American media, policy and education organization.
•    He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Guru Gobind Singh Foundation and also as a Member-at-Large of The Board of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan in Washington.
•    He is an engineering graduate of Bombay University.
•    He also received a Master of Science degree from the State University of New York in US.
•    Council work for :
•    Identifying best practices and successful modes of delivering social services.
•    Evaluating the need for improvements in the implementation and coordination of public policies relating to faith-based and neighborhood organizations.
•    Making recommendations to the President and the Administration on changes in policies, programs, and practices.

Indian-American Revathi Balakrishnan named as 2016 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year

Indian-American elementary teacher, Revathi Balakrishnan was honoured by US President Barack Obama at the White House.
 She was named as 2016 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year.
She received the honour for her excellent work in the field of education at Patsy Sommer Elementary School in Texas.

Infosys Foundation signs pact with IISER

Infosys Foundation has signed a pact with Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, 
•    This is to support students from economically weaker section to pursue ‘high quality’ education.
•    The Memorandum of Understanding aims at providing opportunities for economically weaker students to pursue high quality science education and research through scholarships, fellowships and travel awards, Infosys said in a release.
•    It said as part of the MoU, the corpus fund of Rs. 5 crore named as ‘The Infosys Foundation Endowment Fund’, 
•    This fund will continue in perpetuity to benefit a minimum of 50 students annually.
•    The grant will be used towards the establishment of Infosys Foundation Scholarships which will be awarded to BS-MS students, Infosys Foundation Fellowships endowed to integrated PhD students and Infosys Foundation Travel Awards to PhD students who have excelled in their research work, the company added.
•    Grant is aimed at fulfilling the Foundation’s objective of creating equal opportunities for students from poorer background and advancing the quality of research done at Indian institutions.
•    The establishment of scholarships, fellowships and travel awards provides opportunities for students at different academic levels to gain from the grant, it said.

India ranks Ninth in Crony-Capitalism Index

India is ranked at ninth position in crony-capitalism index that was released by the Economist in the first week of May 2016. 
•    As per the latest crony-capitalism index the non-crony sector wealth in India amounts to 8.3 per cent of the GDP
•    Russia topped the list 
•    It was followed by Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
•    Russia fares worst in the index, wealth from the country's crony sectors amounts to 18 per cent of its GDP.
•    It was based on the work by Ruchir Sharma of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, Aditi Gandhi and Michael Walton of Centre for Policy Research of New Delhi, and others in 2014.
•    Due to its limitations the index was not recognized internationally.
•    It also aims to measure the increase trend in the number of economic rent-seekers.
