NASA launches GOES-R Weather satellite
The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) on 20 November 2016 launched the highly advanced geostationary weather satellite Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R).
● It will boost the weather observation capabilities of the US, leading to more accurate and timely forecasts, watches and warnings.
● It will be into the operations within a year after undergoing testing and validation of new instruments including the first operational lightning mapper in geostationary orbit.
● Its primary instrument Advanced Baseline Imager will provide images of Earth’s weather, oceans and environment with 16 different spectral bands.
● It is also first satellite to carry a lightning mapper instrument to geostationary orbit.
● It will photograph lightning activity throughout Western Hemisphere about 200 times every second.
● There are four satellites in the GOES series: GOES-R, GOES-S, GOES-T and GOES-U
● This will extend NOAA’s geostationary coverage through 2036 and GOES-R.
अमेरिका ने 'अगली पीढ़ी' के एक मौसम उपग्रह को फ्लोरिडा के केप केनवरल वायुसेना अड्डे से शनिवार 6.42 बजे (भारतीय समयानुसार रविवार सुबह 5.12 बजे) छोड़ा.
● नासा ने कहा है कि इससे मौसम का सटीक अनुमान लगाने, निगरानी और तूफान की चेतावनी में मदद मिलेगी.
● अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी ने एक बयान में कहा कि अमेरिकी राष्ट्रीय समुद्री एवं वायुमंडलीय प्रशासन (एनओएए) का जियोस्टेशनरी ऑपरेशनल इनवॉयरमेंटल सैटेलाइट-आर (जीओईएस-आर) अगले दो सप्ताह में अपनी अंतिम कक्षा में पहुंच जाएगा. इसका नाम जीओईएस-16 होगा.
● वाशिंगटन में नासा साइंस मिशन निदेशालय के सहायक प्रशासक थॉमस जुरबुचेन ने कहा, 'जीओईएस-आर का प्रक्षेपण हमारी योग्यता के एक बड़े कदम का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है, जिसमें समय से और सटीक मौसम की भविष्यवाणी और चेतावनी जीवन रक्षा के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है.'
● जुरबुचेन ने कहा, 'यह नासा और नोआ (एनओएए) के एक दशक लंबी साझेदारी से हुआ, जिसमें भूस्थिर पर्यावरण उपग्रह का सफलतापूर्वक निर्माण और उसका प्रक्षेपण किया गया.'
● यह नया उपग्रह जांच और इसके छह नए उपकरणों की पुष्टि के बाद एक साल के अंदर कार्य करना शुरू कर देगा.
● इसमें भूस्थैतिक कक्षा में प्रथम बिजली मैपर का परिचालन भी शामिल है.
