IMD to use supercomputer to forecast monsoon with Dynamical Model
The Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in the last week of July 2016 announced that India Meteorological Department (IMD) will use supercomputer to forecast India’s annual summer monsoon.
• The forecast made by a supercomputer will be based on a dynamical monsoon model. It will be operational from 2017.
• The dynamical model is also known as the Coupled Forecast System.
• It collates data on local as well as global weather patterns to simulate a forecast for a specific duration.
• The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, has been using this model on an experimental basis for around 10 years to assist IMD’s annual monsoon forecasts.
• To operationalise the alternate model, IMD is investing in supercomputers that can function at a speed of 10 petaflops-per second system.
• The dynamical model has achieved a 60% accuracy at present and IMD aims to take it up to 77%.
• The dynamical model and faster computing will also improve short range forecasts as the IMD will be able to access sharper resolution images.
मौसम संबंधी भविष्यवाणियों और मॉनसून के पूर्वानुमान को और अधिक सटीक बनाने हेतु केंद्र सरकार ने जुलाई 2016 के अंतिम सप्ताह में ने हाइ-टेक तकनीक अपनाने की तैयारी की है. इसके तहत भारतीय मौसम विभाग (आईएमडी) डायनामिकल मॉडल के आधार पर सुपर कंप्यूटर का उपयोग करेगा.
• भारत के भू-विज्ञान सचिव के अनुसार देश में डायनामिकल मॉडल के आधारित सुपर कंप्यूटर वर्ष 2017 से सेवाएँ देना आरम्भ कर देगा.
• डायनामिकल मॉडल को युग्मित (कपल्ड) पूर्वानुमान प्रणाली के रूप में जाना जाता है.
• यह मौसम विशिष्ट अवधि के लिए स्थानीय स्तर के साथ साथ वैश्विक पर के मिजाज के डेटा पूर्वानुमान करता है.
• उष्णकटिबंधीय मौसम विज्ञान के भारतीय संस्थान (आईआईटीएम), पुणे, वार्षिक मानसून के पूर्वानुमान के लिए आईएमडी की सहयता हेतु लगभग 10 वर्षों से प्रायोगिक आधार पर इस मॉडल का उपयोग कर रहा है.
• वैकल्पिक मॉडल को लागू करने के लिए, आईएमडी सुपर कंप्यूटर हेतु निवेश कर रही है. यह प्रणाली 10 पेट फ्लॉप्स प्रति सेकंड की गति से कार्य कर सकती है.
• वर्तमान में डायनामिकल मॉडल 60% सटीक परिणाम डे रहा है. आईएमडी का प्रयास इसे 77% तक करने का है.
• डायनामिकल मॉडल विशिष्ट क्षेत्रों के लिए बदलते मौसम के मिजाज और एक प्रगति मानसून के बदलाव के साथ उन्नत पूर्वानुमान हेतु अधिक सटीकता प्रदान करता है.
