World Wildlife Day observed 3rd March
World Wildlife Day was observed on 3 March 2016 across the world.
• 2016 theme was “The future of wildlife is in our hands”, with African and Asian elephants being the main focus of global campaigns.
• World Wildlife Day is a day to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that conservation provides to people.
• 2016 theme reinforces the inextricable link between wildlife, people and sustainable development.
• The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at its 68th session held on 20 December 2013 decided to proclaim 3 March as World Wildlife Day.
• The date is the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973.
• CITES plays an important role in ensuring that international trade does not threaten the species’ survival.
