State of Emergency Declared in Ethiopia
Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency following months of often violent anti-government protests, especially in the restive Oromia region.
● Protests reignited this week in the Oromia region - the main focus of a recent wave of demonstrations - after dozens of people were killed in a stampede on October 2, which was sparked by police firing tear gas and warning shots at a huge crowd of protesters attending a religious festival.
● The official death toll given by the government was 55, though opposition activists and rights groups said they believe more than 100 people died as they fled security forces, falling into ditches that dotted the area.
● The anti-government demonstrations started in November among the Oromo, Ethiopia's biggest ethnic group, and later spread to the Amhara, the second most populous group.
● Though they initially began over land rights, they later broadened into calls for more political, economic and cultural rights.
इथोपिया के प्रधानमंत्री हेलीमरिअम देसालेगन ने आज देश में छह महीने के आपाताकाल की घोषणा करते हुए कहा कि शांति और स्थिरता की स्थिति कायम करने के लिए यह कदम उठाया गया है।
● पिछले कुछ दिनों में प्रदर्शन के दौरान कुछ लोगों की मौत होने और कारखानों एवं संपत्तियों को नुकसान पहुंचने के बाद देश में अस्थिरता का माहौल है। पिछले सप्ताह प्रदर्शनकारियों ने कुछ वाहनों को क्षतिग्रस्त कर दिया था।
● प्रधानमंत्री ने सरकारी टेलीविजन पर कहा कि देश के लोगों पर खतरे की स्थिति के मद्देनजर यह आपातकाल लगाया गया है। उन्होंने कहा कि आपातकाल महत्वपूर्ण है। कुछ ही समय में देश में शांति और स्थिरता की स्थिति के लिए यह जरूरी है।
● उन्होंने कहा कि सत्तारूढ़ इथोपियन पीपुल्स रिवोल्यूशनरी डेमोक्रेटिक फ्रंट गठबंधन सुधारों की ओर देख रहा है और विपक्षी दलों के साथ वार्ता करने की उसकी योजना है। उन्होंने कहा कि आपातकाल आठ अक्टूबर से प्रभावी हो गया है।
● पिछले रविवार को इथोपिया के अरोमिया क्षेत्र में एक धार्मिक उत्सव में सरकार विरोधी प्रदर्शनकारियों को तितर-बितर करने के लिए पुलिस ने आंसू गैस के गोले छोड़े थे और हवा में गोलियां चलाई थी तथा इसके बाद मची भगदड़ में 55 लोगों की मौत हो गई थी।
