Russia voted out of UN Human Rights Council
Russia, facing allegations of war crimes in relation to its policies in Syria, lost its seat on the UN Human Rights Council as the UN General Assembly
● The 193-member General Assembly yesterday elected 14 nations by secret ballot to serve on the Human Rights Council.
● The United Nations body responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe.
● Brazil, China, Croatia, Cuba, Egypt, Hungary, Iraq, Japan, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Tunisia, United Kingdom and the United States were elected for three-year terms beginning January 1, 2017.
● India is a member of the 47-member human rights body and its term will expire in 2017.
● Russia was seeking re-election to the human rights body, competing with Hungary, Croatia and Bulgaria.
सीरिया में अपनी नीतियों के संबंध में युद्ध अपराध के आरोपों का सामना कर रहे रूस को संयुक्त राष्ट्र मानवाधिकार परिषद में अपनी सीट गंवानी पड़ी है।
● संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा ने जिनीवा स्थित संयुक्त राष्ट्र मानवाधिकार परिषद के 14 सदस्यों के चुनाव के लिए शुक्रवार (28 अक्टूबर) को मतदान कराया था।
● 193-सदस्यीय महासभा ने मानवाधिकार परिषद के लिए गुप्त मतदान द्वारा 14 राष्ट्रों का शुक्रवार को चुनाव किया था। संयुक्त राष्ट्र की यह संस्था पूरे विश्व में सभी मानव अधिकारों को बढ़ावा देने और उनके संरक्षण के लिए जिम्मेदार है।
● ब्राजील, चीन, क्रोएशिया, क्यूबा, मिस्र, हंगरी, इराक, जापान, रवांडा, सऊदी अरब, दक्षिण अफ्रीका, ट्यूनीशिया, ब्रिटेन और अमेरिका को एक जनवरी, 2017 से तीन वर्ष के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र मानवाधिकार परिषद का सदस्य चुना गया है।
● भारत 47 सदस्यीय मानवाधिकार निकाय का सदस्य है और उसका कार्यकाल 2017 में खत्म होगा।
● रूस दोबारा इस निकाय का सदस्य बनना चाहता था और पूर्वी यूरोप ब्लॉक की दो सीटों के लिए उसका मुकाबला हंगरी, क्रोएशिया और बुल्गारिया से था।
● मतदान में रूस को 112 वोट, क्रोएशिया को 114 वोट और हंगरी को 144 वोट मिले।
