President's rule imposed in Arunachal Pradesh

President Pranab Mukherjee has recently given consent to imposition of President’s Rule in the state of Arunachal Pradesh on the grounds of political instability. Controversy arose when the Governor of the state, Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa advanced the date of the convening of the assembly session.

"President's rule" refers to the imposition of Article 356 of the Constitution of India on a State whose constitutional machinery has failed. In the event that a State government is not able to function as per the Constitution, the State comes under the direct control of the central government. The first instance of the imposition of President’s Rule was in 1954, when it was applied in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
