Palaeo-channel of Chandrabhaga river found in Odisha
Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have claimed to discover evidence of lost river Chandrabhaga in Odisha.
● Earlier, KS Valdiya led expert committee had found out that Saraswati River did exist and flowed through India and Pakistan before meeting Arabian Sea through Rann of Kutch.
● Chandrabhaga River is an ancient mythical river believed to have existed at a distance of about two km from the 13th century Sun Temple at Konark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Odisha.
● It has been mentioned prominently in ancient literature. Besides, almost all lore regarding Konark, including illustrations and photographs, indicate presence of the river in proximity of temple.
● At present, no trace of any water body is at present visible in proximity of temple.
● The IIT study was conducted through an integrated geological and geophysical exploration in conjunction with historical evidence and analysis of satellite data.
● Imagery from US’s Landsat and Terra satellites and those obtained by NASA Space Shuttle Endeavour’s Radar Topographic Mission in 2000 were also used.
विशेषज्ञों की एक समिति ने हाल ही में पुराणों में वर्णित सरस्वती नदी की भारत के पश्चिमोत्तर हिस्से में मौजूदगी की पुष्टि की। इसके बाद अब भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान खड़गपुर के वैज्ञानिकों ने एक और ‘विलुप्त’ भारतीय नदी के साक्ष्य पाने का दावा कर रहे हैं।
● इस प्राचीन नदी का नाम चंद्रभागा है और माना जा रहा है कि 13वीं शताब्दी में बने कोणार्क के सूर्य मंदिर से दो किलोमीटर की दूरी पर इसका अस्तित्व था। ओडिशा में स्थित कोणार्क मंदिर यूनेस्को के विश्व धरोहर स्थलों में शामिल है।
● करेंट साइंस जरनल में प्रकाशित रिपोर्ट में कहा गया है कि मंदिर के आसपास किसी जल स्रोत की मौजूदगी अभी नजर नहीं आ रही है लेकिन इस ‘पौराणिक नदी का जिक्र प्राचीन साहित्य में प्रमुखता के साथ मिलता है।’
● उनका कहना है कि कोणार्क से जुड़ी लगभग सभी पौराणिक कहानियों में इस मंदिर के आसपास चंद्रभागा नदी की मौजूदगी का संकेत मिलता है। चित्रों व तस्वीरों में भी नदी को दर्शाया गया है।
● आईआईटी के अध्ययन का मकसद इस मिथक की सच्चाई जांचना था। अध्ययनकर्ताओं ने ऐतिहासिक साक्ष्यों के मेल से एकीकृत भूगर्भीय और भू-भौतिकीय अन्वेषण और उपग्रह से मिले आंकड़ों के विश्लेषण के जरिए यह अध्ययन किया।
● अमेरिका के लैंडसेट और टेरा सेटलाइट से प्राप्त तस्वीरों और नासा के अंतरिक्ष यान एंडेवर के रडार टोपाग्राफिक मिशन के वर्ष 2000 की तस्वीरों का इस्तेमाल किया गया।
