New wasp species discovered from Western Ghats
A new species of wasp has been discovered from the Western Ghats, one of the biodiversity hotspots of the country.
● Muhamed Jafer Palot of Western Ghats Regional Centre (WGRC) of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Kozhikode, said this wasp belonged to the sub-family of Eumeninae of the family Vespidae.
● This new species was so far recorded from Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Nilambur forests, and also from Muthappanpuzha of Kozhikode district.
● The new species was discovered by a team consisting of P. Girish Kumar and P. M. Sureshan, of the WGRC of ZSI, and James M. Carpenter of the American Museum of Natural History, New York.
● Along with this new species, two other new species were spotted in the forests of Assam and Meghalaya.
● Adding with these discoveries, the total number of species of genus ‘Parancistrocerus’ has been increased to three in Kerala and 11 in India.
ततैया की एक नई प्रजाति को पश्चिमी घाट में देश की जैव विविधता के आकर्षण के केंद्र में से एक से खोज की गई है।
● ज़ूलोजीकल सर्वे ऑफ़ इंडिया, पश्चिमी घाट क्षेत्रीय केंद्र के मुहमद जफर प्लॉट, कोझीकोड ने बताया की ये ततैया वेसपीड़ाए परिवार के यूमेनिए के उप-परिवार के थे।
● इस नई प्रजाति को अब तक कोझिकोड जिले के मुतअप्पानपुज़हा, मालाबार वन्यजीव अभयारण्य, रालम वन्यजीव अभयारण्य, निलाम्बुर जंगलों में दर्ज किया गया था।
● नई प्रजाति की खोज ज़ूलोजीकल सर्वे ऑफ़ इंडिया, पश्चिमी घाट क्षेत्रीय केंद्र के पी गिरीश कुमार और पी एम सुरेषन और अमेरिकी प्राकृतिक इतिहास संग्रहालय, न्यूयॉर्क के जेम्स एम बढ़ई की एक टीम ने की ।
● इस नई प्रजाति के साथ-साथ दो अन्य नई प्रजाति असम और मेघालय के जंगलों में देखा गया था।
● इन खोजों के साथ प्रजातियों की कुल संख्या केरल में तीन और भारत में 11 तक बढ़ गई है।
