IWAI-DST Contract Signed
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) on 21 September 2016 signed a contract with DST, Germany to design vessels, especially suited to navigate the 1620 km stretch of National Waterway-1 (NW-1).
• DST will develop a combination of standardised vessels to meet the requirement of various types of cargo.
• One of the most important navigational challenges for NW-1 is the kind of vessels that will play on the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly stretch.
• Keeping in view the difficult hydro-morphological characteristics of the river in the upper reaches between Patna and Varanasi, it is important to have vessels which can ply on low draft, with high carrying capacity, and are economically viable and environment friendly.
• Union Government is developing the National Waterway-1 under the Jal Marg Vikas Project, with assistance from the World Bank at an estimated cost of 4200 crore rupees.
जहाजरानी मंत्रालय के भारतीय अंतर्देशीय जलमार्ग प्राधिकरण (आईडब्ल्यूएआई) ने 21 सितंबर 2016 को जर्मनी की कंपनी मेसर्स डीएसटी के साथ जहाज डिजायन करने के एक अनुबंध पर हस्ताक्षर किए हैं. अनुबंध का उद्देश्य राष्ट्रीय जल मार्ग (एनडब्ल्यू-1) के माध्यम से सुरक्षित, पर्यावरणमूलक और सस्ता परिवहन उपलब्ध करना है. निर्माणाधीन जहाज एनडब्ल्यू-1 के 1620 किलोमीटर लंबे जलमार्ग पर चलने हेतु विशेष रूप से डिजायन किए जाएंगे.
• विशेष रूप से डिजायन इन जहाजों का नौचालन कम खिंचाव (लो ड्रॉफ्ट) पर होगा.पर्यावरणमूलक इन जहाजों की वहन क्षमता अत्यधिक होगी.
• एनडब्ल्यू-1 जलमार्ग हेतु गंगा- भागीरथ–हुगली क्षेत्र में नौचालन महत्वपूर्ण चुनौती हेागी.
• पटना और वाराणसी के मध्य नदी के ऊपरी फैलाव में मुश्किल जलीय-आकृतिक गुणों को देखते हुए, यह बहुत महत्वपूर्ण हो जाता है कि जहाज कम खिंचाव वाला, उच्च वहन क्षमता वाला, सस्ता और पर्यावरण मूलक हो.
• केंद्र सरकार विश्व बैंक की सहायता से एनडब्ल्यू-1 जल मार्ग विकास परियोजना पर काम कर रही है.इस पर 4,200 रुपये की लागत का अनुमान है.
