India-Sri Lanka Meet on Fishermen Issues
India and Sri Lanka have agreed to set up a Joint Working Group on Fisheries (JWG) and a hotline between their Coast Guards to address the long-standing issue of fishermen from Tamil Nadu being arrested.
● On Wednesday, the Rural Fishermen Society president offered a deal for Indian boats to be allowed to fish in Sri Lankan waters for 85 days every year for the next three years before they are phased out.
● Rejecting that offer, fishermen from Jaffna said they wanted an immediate end to “bottom trawling”
● It is a practice that depletes the ocean’s resources, and refused to return more than 100 trawlers seized by Sri Lankan authorities since 2014.
● Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh, Sri Lankan Minister for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera, as well Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways & Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan and Sri Lankan MP M.A. Sumanthiran participated in the discussions.
मछुआरों के मुद्दे के समाधान के लिये विदेश मंत्री सुषमा स्वराज और श्रीलंका के विदेश मंत्री मंगला समरवीरा के बीच आज नई दिल्ली में उच्च स्तरीय बैठक होगी।
● इस मुद्दे के समाधान के लिए दोनों देशों के मछुआरा संघों के बीच आम सहमति न हो पाने के बाद विदेश मंत्रियों की बैठक हो रही है।
● उत्तरी श्रीलंका के मछुआरे दावा कर रहे हैं कि भारतीय मछुआरों के श्रीलंका क्षेत्र में मछली पकड़ने और समुद्र में काफी गहराई में जाल डालने के कारण उनकी रोज़ी रोटी पर असर पड़ रहा है।
● उधर तमिलनाडु और पुदुचेरी के मछुआरे श्रीलंका की नौसेना द्वारा उन्हें गिरफ्तार किए जाने और उनकी नौकाएं जब्त करने का विरोध करते रहे हैं।
● आज की बैठक से पहले इस सप्ताह के शुरू में नौ भारतीय मछुआरों को श्रीलंका ने छोड़ दिया था।
● प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी से पिछले महीने मुलाकात के दौरान श्रीलंका के राष्ट्रपति और प्रधानमंत्री ने यह मुद्दा उठाया था और दोनों पक्ष उच्च स्तरीय बैठक करने पर सहमत हुए थे।
