NATIONAL:

India elected to Executive Board of first UN-Habitat Assembly.

• First session of the UN-Habitat Assembly will be held from 27-31 May 2019, at the headquarters of UN-Habitat in Nairobi.

• The Theme is: “Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”. 

• The Sub-theme as: “Accelerated implementation of the New Urban Agenda towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”.

• During the first session, The Assembly is expected to establish the Executive Board of UN-Habitat and elect its members, to review and approve the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2025 and also review the Progress in the implementation of New Urban Agenda, among other things.

• A State which is a member of a Specialized Agency and the Observer Members States of the United Nations may participate in the deliberations of the UN-Habitat Assembly in the capacity of an observer.

• The Assembly will also be attended by United Nations Agencies, Local authorities and non-state actors including civil society, youth and women group representatives, the private sector and the Academia.

Maldives Ex-Leader Mohamed Nasheed Tipped as New Speaker.

• Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed nominated as the country’s parliamentary speaker.

1. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is the current President of the Maldives.

2. Male is the capital of the Maldives.

3. The Maldivian rufiyaa is the currency of the Maldives.

Ola Electric appoints ex-Vodafone Group CEO Arun Sarin to board.

• Bengaluru-based Ola's newly-formed company Ola Electric has appointed former Vodafone Group CEO Arun Sarin as an independent director on its board. Sarin also currently serves on the boards of Cisco Systems, Accenture, Charles Schwab and Ola's parent company ANI Technologies. The IIT- Kharagpur alumni had received an Honorary Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in 2010

About Ola Electric:

• India's first multimodal electric vehicle project launched on the 26th of May, 2017.

• The project brought together industry and government to pioneer electric vehicles for

public and shared mobility in Nagpur.

Candy Crush maker King's Co-founder quits as CEO after 16 yrs.

• Riccardo Zacconi, Co-founder of video game developer King, known for developing the Candy Crush Saga game, has stepped down as the CEO, its parent firm Activision Blizzard's regulatory filings revealed. Zacconi, an Italian businessman, led King for around 16 years after it was founded in 2003. However, he will stay on as King's Chairman, the filings further revealed.

About Candy Crush Saga:

• Candy Crush Saga is a free-to-play match-three puzzle video game released by King on April 12, 2012, for Facebook; other versions for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 10 followed. It is a variation of their browser game Candy Crush.

AWARDS:

South Korean film 'Parasite' wins top award at Cannes Film Fest.

• Director Bong Joon-Ho became the first South Korean to win the Palme d'Or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his film 'Parasite'. Filmmaker Mati Diop, the first black woman director to be considered for the Palme d'Or, won the Grand Prix, the runner-up prize for her film 'Atlantics'. Belgium's Dardenne brothers won Best Director for 'Young Ahmed'.
