NATIONAL:

CM Yogi Adityanath unveiled a 7 foot tall statue of Lord Rama at the Shodh Sansthan museum.

• Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled a 7-foot tall statue of Lord Rama at the Shodh Sansthan museum in Ayodhya on 7 June. Adityanath will also inaugurate the event to celebrate Mahant Nritya Gopal Das.

Ram Statue:

• The statue is made out of a single rosewood block statue which was from Karnataka for Rs.35 lakh from Karnataka. The statue will depict Kodamb Ram, one of the five avatars of Lord Ram.

• Kodamb Ram is worshipped in the south. The statue depicts the stage of Ram's life when Sita was kidnapped by Ravan, the demon king. The statue shows Ram alone, without Sita and Laxman.

Ayodhya Shodh Sansthan:

• The Ayodhya Shodh Sansthan museum was established in 1986. The museum is a government-funded museum. It hosts works related to the Hindu epic Ramayana.

The Dispute:

• Lord Ram is said to have been born in Ayodhya. Ayodhya is at the heart of a dispute which involves the site where the 16th-century Babri mosque stood before it was razed in 1992 by Hindu activists. It is believed that it was built on the ruins of an ancient temple marking the birthplace of Lord Ram. After the mosque demolition, 2,000 people died across the country in the riot.

• In 2018, the Uttar Pradesh State government announced a project to build a Ram statue on the banks of the Sarayu river. It is expected to measure 221 metres topping even the famed freedom movement icon Sardar Patel's Statue of Unity in Gujarat. The central government is yet to announce a date for the construction of Ram temple.

India Foreign Minister Jaishankar in Bhutan on his 1st bilateral visit.

• External Affairs Minister of India, S Jaishankar reached Bhutan on June 7 on a two-day visit.

This is his first overseas trip after assuming charge of the Foreign ministry.

• During his visit, the two countries discuss the entire gamut of bilateral relations, including the upcoming high-level exchanges, economic development and hydro-power cooperation.

Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel Takes Oath As New CJI Of Delhi High Court.

• Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

• Lt Governor Anil Baijal administered the oath of office to Justice Patel at a function held at Raj Niwas.

• Earlier, Justice Patel was posted at the Jharkhand High Court.

• Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name for the appointment as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court

Uber COO and CMO step down a month after IPO fails.

• Uber confirmed on Friday that its Chief Operating Officer Barney Harford and Chief Marketing Officer Rebecca Messina will depart the company. This comes a month after Uber's IPO failed. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who explained the departures in an email to employees, said that he wants to be even more involved in the day-to-day operations of the business.

World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8th June.

• World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8th June every year. The day was declared in 2008. June 8 was marked as it marks the day when it was first proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit, UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Conference supported the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Theme 2019:

• The theme for the year 2019 is Gender and Oceans. The theme is to build greater ocean and gender literacy and to discover possible ways to promote gender equality in ocean-related activities such as marine scientific research, fisheries, labour at sea, migration by sea and human trafficking, as well as policy-making and management.

• The importance of gender equality is being recognized increasingly for the effective conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. Yet very little data and researches are available on these issues. Serious action towards gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is still needed in all ocean-related sectors to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5.

Plastic Pollution:

• María Fernanda Espinosa, the President of the General Assembly launched Play It Out which is a global campaign against plastic pollution. Decades of overuse of single-use plastics has caused a huge menace to the marine lives. 13,000,000 tonnes of plastic leak into the ocean every year which kills 100,000 marine animals annually.

• While most plastics are expected to remain intact for decades or centuries after use. These plastics erode and ends up as micro-plastics, consumed by fish and other marine wildlife, quickly making their way into the global food chain.

PM Modi awarded Maldives' highest honour for foreign dignitaries.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Saturday conferred the Maldives' highest honour accorded to foreign dignitaries, 'The Most Honourable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen', during his visit to the island nation. PM Modi is visiting the Maldives as part of his first diplomatic foreign visit after he assumed office for a second term.

SPORTS:

England 1st team in ODI history to score seven 300+ totals in a row.

• England have become the first team in ODIs to score seven 300-plus totals in a row, achieving the feat against Bangladesh in 2019 World Cup on Saturday. England scored 386/6 in 50 overs, with Jason Roy top-scoring with 153 runs off 121 balls including 14 fours and 5 sixes. It is also England's highest ever total in World Cup history.
