IMPORTANT DAYS

-International Internet Day is celebrated worldwide, every year on 29th of October.

Since the year 2005 the International Internet Day has been famously celebrated to commemorate a momentous day in the history of telecommunications and technology.

NATIONAL AFFAIRS

Manohar Lal Khattar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Haryana

Manohar Lal Khattar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Haryana for a second term on 27 October. He will lead the BJP-JJP (Jannayak Janata Party) coalition government in the state. Also, JJP leader Dushyant Chautala took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana. The oath office was administered by Haryana Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya at the Raj Bhawan.

-Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will represent India at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) heads of state meeting, which is to be held in Uzbekistan on 2 November. Mr. Singh is to embark on a three-day visit to Uzbekistan from 1-3 November.

He will also hold a meeting with Uzbekistan's defence minister. Both Ministers will discuss military cooperation. It is expected that they will conclude discussions on two pacts on military education and cooperation and military.

- Ladakh Literature Festival began on 29 October in Leh for the first time ever. The three-day fest will conclude on 31 October 2019. It will culminate on the day when Ladakh would formally become a Union Territory (UT) on 31 October. The festival will mark the official separation of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Organized by: Ladakh Literature Festival is organized by the Divisional Administration in association with the J&K Tourism Department, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development.

Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM (C)) secured the 17th rank globally in the Financial Times Masters in Management Rankings 2019.

-Delhi to announce free ride for senior citizens and all students

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that the free-ride scheme for women on Delhi public buses might be extended to senior citizens and all students.

-Nirmala Sitharaman released a special coin on Paramahansa Yoganandas 125th birth anniversary

29 October 2019 Current Affairs: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman released a special commemorative coin on Paramahansa Yogananda to mark his 125th Birth Anniversary on 29th October. He was recognized globally by the message of his that brought harmony.

Paramahansa Yogananda:

Paramahansa Yogananda was born in 1893. He is considered one of the preeminent spiritual figures of modern times. He died in 1952.

Paramahansa has profoundly impacted the lives of millions with his comprehensive teachings on:

♦ the science of Kriya Yoga meditation

♦ the underlying unity of all true religions

♦ the art of balanced health and well-being in body, mind, and soul.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

-World Bank, the multi-lateral funding agency, has announced that it is to continue providing a $6 billion annual lending target for India to support infrastructure development and alleviate poverty. The announcement was made by President of World Bank David Malpass during his visit in the backdrop of the recently released World Bank report on Ease of Doing Business 2020.

- The 29th BASIC Ministers' Meeting on Climate Change was held in Beijing

 29 October 2019 Current Affairs: The 29th BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India, and China) Ministers' Meeting on Climate Change was held in Beijing, China, on 25th-26th October 2019. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. LI Ganjie, Minister of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China. Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and I&B Mr. Prakash Javadekar represented India in the Ministers' meeting.

Highlights:

♦ The BASIC countries called for comprehensive implementation of the Paris climate deal

♦ The ministers of the meeting called on the developed nations to deliver on their commitment to provide $100 billion climate

♦ The ministers decided to foster climate resilience and promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, low-carbon, and sustainable development

♦ The ministers agreed to collectively work towards the preparedness of the international community for the wellbeing of all

♦ The meeting highlighted that developing countries, including BASIC countries, are notwithstanding various challenges including food security, poverty eradication, and insufficient and uneven progress of domestic development

♦ Substantial gaps in mitigation, adaptation, and support provided by developed countries to developing countries in the pre-2020 period were highlighted in the meeting. The Ministers urged the developed countries to take immediate measures to close the gaps by revisiting the targets set for the countries on mitigation under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol and fulfilling their commitments of providing support to developing countries.

-Exercise Shakti-2019

Exercise Shakti-2019, a bilateral exercise between the Indian Army and French Army, is to be held at the Foreign Training Node at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan from 31 October to 13 November.

-Baghdadi died whimpering, crying like a coward: US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump announced the success of the raid, saying that ISIS chief Baghdadi, who is said to be 48 years old, died "whimpering and crying and screaming", and "like a dog and a coward", adding that the ISIS leader and "the losers" under his command "were very frightened puppies".

SPORTS AFFAIRS

-Tiger Woods has equaled the world record for most career titles on PGA Tour. He set this feat by winning the Zozo Championship in Japan as his 82nd US PGA Tour victory. The previous world record for most career titles on PGA Tour was set by Sam Snead. Slammin’ Sam Snead set the record in 1965.

29 Oct, 1964 - Middle East Israel Invades Egypt

1964 : The Star of India (563.35 carat (112.67 g) star sapphire) and the Eagle Diamond (16.25 carat discovered in Eagle, Wisconsin) are stolen from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Star of India is later recovered but the Eagle Diamond is never found.

29 Oct, 1998 - South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission

October 29th, 1998 : The Truth and Reconciliation Commission which was to "was to uncover the truth about past abuse, using amnesty as a means of allowing perpetrators of crimes relating to human rights violations, to apologize rather than to be punished past crimes". The commission presented its report on this day in history which condemned both sides for committing atrocities.

29 Oct, 2004 - Italy European Constitution

2004 : The European Constitution is established when 25 European heads of state sign the Treaty in Rome. The treaty required each member state to ratify before becoming law but French and Dutch voters rejected the treaty in referendums and the treaty is not implemented.

           

29 Oct, 2013 - Tunnel Links Europe and Asia

2013 : The Marmaray sub-sea tunnel was officially opened in Turkey. The tunnel was built to link Europe and Asia through the Bosphorus Strait. It is the first tunnel to connect two continents together and it was built with the intention to withstand damage from earthquakes.
