Onam Festival Celebrated in Kerala Amidst Flood Relief

The floods that dampened Onam 2018, the harvest festival of the southern state, did not, however, dampen the spirit of the state that remained in the news not just for the havoc the heavy rain created but for its reprising sense of humanity in a time of grief. This was echoed in the Onam wishes across the country.

The Kerala government earlier this month cancelled Onam celebrations, a first in the state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan then announced diversion of the Rs. 30 crore, set aside for the festivity, to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief fund.

About Onam

Onam is an annual Hindu festival with origins in the state of Kerala in India. It falls in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, which in Gregorian calendar overlaps with August–September.

Govt clears procurement of 111 naval helicopters at a cost of Rs 21K cr

In a major decision, the Defence Ministry today gave its nod to acquisition of 111 utility helicopters for the Navy at a cost of over Rs 21,000 crore besides approving separate procurement proposals worth nearly Rs 25,000 crore, according to officials. The utility helicopters will be used in attack missions as well as for search and rescue and surveillance operations.

The procurement of the naval utility helicopters will be the first project under the ambitious strategic partnership (SP) model which provides for roping in private firm to build select military platforms in India in partnership with foreign defence manufacturers.

About the SP Model

In May last year, the defence ministry had finalised the SP model under which select private firms will be roped in to build military platforms like submarines, fighter jets and choppers in India in partnership with foreign entities. The policy envisages establishment of long-term strategic partnerships with Indian defence majors through a transparent and competitive process wherein they would tie up with global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to seek technology transfers to set up domestic manufacturing infrastructure and supply chains. Initially, the strategic partners will be selected in four segments - fighter aircraft, helicopters, submarines and armoured fighting vehicles/main battle tanks. It is expected to be expanded to other segments at a later stage.
