Kerala’s Kumbalangi to Become India’s First Sanitary Napkin-free Village

• Kerala’s Kumbalanghi is set to become the country’s first sanitary napkin-free panchayat. This move is a part of the ‘Avalkayi’ initiative, which is being implemented in the Ernakulam parliamentary constituency, in association with the “Thingal Scheme” of HLL Management Academy’s and Indian Oil Corporation. Under this initiative, menstrual cups will be distributed to women aged 18 and above in Kumbalangi village. 5000 menstrual cups will be distributed under it.

• In the same event, Governor will also declare Kumbalangi village as a model village. The model village project is implemented as a part of ‘Pradhan Mantri Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (PM-SAGY)’. A new tourist information centre will also be set up in the village.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh launches AI driven start-up by IIT alumni for water purification

• Union Minister of State (I/C) Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh has launched Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven Start-Up by Indian Institute Technology (IIT) alumni for water purification through innovative technology with financial support from Technology Development Board (TDB). The facility aims to provide clean drinking water at a price much lesser than the market price.

• A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between TDB, a statutory body of the Department of S&T and Swajal Water Private Limited. The Gurugram based company’s patented system, ‘Clairvoyant’ uses artificial intelligence to optimise purification systems and predict future breakdowns. The company is focused on innovative technologies to make reliable clean drinking water accessible to communities at affordable price, for their project on IoT enabled point of use Solar Water Purification Unit for slums, villages and High Utility Areas.

Defence Ministry sets up online portal to resolve pension-related grievances: Rajnath Singh

• The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh has set up an online Raksha Pension Shikayat Nivaran Portal to resolve pension-related grievances of ex-servicemen (ESM) and their dependents. The portal will allow them to lodge grievances directly with the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (DESW), he stated on the occasion of Armed Forces Veterans Day.

• The minister also announced that the DESW has allotted Rs 320 crore to Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF) to clear all backlog of pending applications for welfare schemes, especially education and marriage grants for widows or dependent children of ESM. The Minister also stated that the Directorate General of Resettlement has issued 22,278 job letters—including 7,898 job letters to freshly retired/first-time entrants—to civil life ESMs in the government sector/PSUs/banks and private sector during the year April 2021-December 2021.

Savita Punia named captain of Indian women hockey team for Asia Cup in Muscat

• Goalkeeper Savita Punia will lead India at the upcoming women’s Asia Cup in Muscat as Hockey India named a strong 18-member squad for the event, including 16 players that featured at the Tokyo Olympics. Since regular skipper Rani Rampal is recovering from an injury in Bengaluru, Savita will lead the side in the tournament, which is scheduled to be held between January 21-28.

• Indian women are the defending champions. Seven other teams competing at the Women’s Hockey Asia Cup 2022 are China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.

Russian Aslan Karatsev won third ATP Title in Sydney Tennis Classic

• In tennis, Aslan Karatsev defeated Andy Murray by 6-3, 6-3, to win men’s single title at the Sydney Tennis Classic final, to claim his third ATP Tour title. The women’s single title was claimed by Spanish world number nine Paula Badosa, who defeated Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 4-6 7-6(4), to capture her third career title.

Adani Power appoints Shersingh Khyalia as CEO with immediate effect

• The Board of Directors of Adani Power Limited (APL), a subsidiary of Adani Group, approved the appointment of Shersingh B Khyalia as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Adani Powers with effect from 11th January 2022. He is a Chartered Accountant, who has served as the Managing Director in Gujarat Power Corporation. Earlier, Khyalia has worked as Managing Director in Gujarat Power Corporation, where he got experience of the Renewable Power Sector especially the development of Ultra Mega Renewable Parks.

Former Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita dies aged 76

• The former President of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was ousted in a military coup, has passed away. Mr Keita had ruled Mali for seven years, since September 2013, till he was overthrown in a military coup in August 2020. He had also served as prime minister of the country from 1994 to 2000. He had promised to restore Mali’s honour as a model for democracy in West Africa as he campaigned as a unifying figure in his fractured country, pledging “zero tolerance” for corruption.

Padma Shri awardee, eminent social activist Shanti Devi dies in Odisha

• Odisha’s social worker and Padma Shri awardee Shanti Devi, who was remembered as the voice of the poor, has passed away. She was 88. She was also called Lugdi Devi. She was known for her dedication towards the underprivileged community and restoring peace in the Maoist-affected areas in Odisha. She has received the prestigious Padma Shri award from President Ram Nath Kovind on November 9, 2021.

Mrs World 2022: Mrs America Shaylyn Ford Takes The Crown; UAE & Jordan Runner Ups

• 37 Years old Shaylyn Ford was crowned as the winner of Mrs World 2022. She was crowned by the outgoing queen Kate Schneider from Ireland. Mrs Jordan Jaclyn Stapp & Mrs UAE Debanjali Kamstra were the runner up. Shaylyn Ford represented America in the pageant and battled out 57 other contestants from across the globe to claim the title. This is the 8th time an American representative won the title of Mrs. World.

• Shaylyn Ford hails from Granville, Ohio, USA. She won the annual Mrs American pageant on November 19, 2021. She is a professional makeup artist, who has worked in every setting, from movie sets to make-a-wish projects. She has been married to her pastor husband for the past seven years and has three children. She also serves as a charitable director and does a lot of volunteer work to bring services to special needs families.

India's Navdeep Kaur wins Best National Costume award for her Kundalini Chakra dress at Mrs World 2022

• India’s Navdeep Kaur has won the award for the Best National Costume at the prestigious Mrs World 2022 pageant in Nevada, Las Vegas. She is the winner of Mrs India World 2021, was representing the country at Mrs World 2022. Navdeep hails from a small town near Odisha’s Steel City, Rourkela.

• The “avant garde” outfit was inspired by Kundalini Chakra, which “symbolises the movement of energy in chakras of the body from the base to the spine up through the crown”. Cobra embellishments on the shoulder were added to represent the “mystical serpent native to India”, while the golden colour was chosen as it represents novelty, power and glory.

केरल का कुंबलंगी भारत का पहला सैनिटरी नैपकिन मुक्त गांव बन जाएगा

• केरल का कुंबलांगी देश की पहली सैनिटरी नैपकिन मुक्त पंचायत बनने के लिए तैयार है। यह कदम 'अवलकायी' पहल का एक हिस्सा है, जिसे एचएलएल प्रबंधन अकादमी और इंडियन ऑयल कॉर्पोरेशन की "थिंगल योजना" के सहयोग से एर्नाकुलम संसदीय क्षेत्र में लागू किया जा रहा है। इस पहल के तहत कुंबलांगी गांव में 18 वर्ष से अधिक उम्र की महिलाओं को मेंस्ट्रुअल कप बांटे जाएंगे। इसके तहत 5000 मासिक धर्म कप बांटे जाएंगे।

• इसी आयोजन में राज्यपाल कुंबलांगी गांव को भी आदर्श गांव घोषित करेंगे। आदर्श ग्राम परियोजना को 'प्रधान मंत्री संसद आदर्श ग्राम योजना (पीएम-एसएजीवाई)' के एक भाग के रूप में लागू किया गया है। गांव में एक नया पर्यटन सूचना केंद्र भी स्थापित किया जाएगा।

केंद्रीय मंत्री जितेंद्र सिंह ने जल शोधन के लिए IIT के पूर्व छात्रों द्वारा AI संचालित स्टार्ट-अप लॉन्च किया

• केंद्रीय राज्य मंत्री (स्वतंत्र प्रभार) विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी डॉ जितेंद्र सिंह ने प्रौद्योगिकी विकास बोर्ड (TDB) से वित्तीय सहायता के साथ नवीन प्रौद्योगिकी के माध्यम से जल शोधन के लिए भारतीय संस्थान प्रौद्योगिकी (आईआईटी) के पूर्व छात्रों द्वारा आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस (एआई) संचालित स्टार्ट-अप लॉन्च किया है। इस सुविधा का उद्देश्य बाजार मूल्य से काफी कम कीमत पर स्वच्छ पेयजल उपलब्ध कराना है।

• विज्ञान एवं प्रौद्योगिकी विभाग के एक सांविधिक निकाय टीडीबी और स्वजल वाटर प्राइवेट लिमिटेड के बीच एक समझौता ज्ञापन (एमओयू) पर भी हस्ताक्षर किए गए। गुरुग्राम स्थित कंपनी की पेटेंट प्रणाली, 'क्लेयरवॉयंट' शुद्धिकरण प्रणालियों को अनुकूलित करने और भविष्य के टूटने की भविष्यवाणी करने के लिए कृत्रिम बुद्धिमत्ता का उपयोग करती है। कंपनी झुग्गी बस्तियों, गांवों और उच्च उपयोगिता वाले क्षेत्रों के लिए आईओटी सक्षम बिंदु सौर जल शोधन इकाई पर अपनी परियोजना के लिए सस्ती कीमत पर समुदायों के लिए विश्वसनीय स्वच्छ पेयजल उपलब्ध कराने के लिए नवीन तकनीकों पर ध्यान केंद्रित कर रही है।

पेंशन संबंधी शिकायतों के समाधान के लिए रक्षा मंत्रालय ने ऑनलाइन पोर्टल स्थापित किया: राजनाथ सिंह

• रक्षा मंत्री, राजनाथ सिंह ने पूर्व सैनिकों (ईएसएम) और उनके आश्रितों की पेंशन संबंधी शिकायतों को हल करने के लिए एक ऑनलाइन रक्षा पेंशन शिकायत निवारण पोर्टल की स्थापना की है। पोर्टल उन्हें पूर्व सैनिक कल्याण विभाग (डीईएसडब्ल्यू) के साथ सीधे शिकायत दर्ज करने की अनुमति देगा, उन्होंने सशस्त्र बल वयोवृद्ध दिवस के अवसर पर कहा।

• मंत्री ने यह भी घोषणा की कि डीईएसडब्ल्यू ने सशस्त्र सेना झंडा दिवस कोष (एएफएफडीएफ) को 320 करोड़ रुपये आवंटित किए हैं ताकि कल्याणकारी योजनाओं, विशेष रूप से ईएसएम की विधवाओं या आश्रित बच्चों के लिए शिक्षा और विवाह अनुदान के लिए लंबित आवेदनों के सभी बैकलॉग को पूरा किया जा सके। मंत्री ने यह भी कहा कि पुनर्वास महानिदेशालय ने वर्ष अप्रैल 2021- दिसंबर 2021 के दौरान सरकारी क्षेत्र / सार्वजनिक उपक्रमों / बैंकों और निजी क्षेत्र में नागरिक जीवन ईएसएम को 22,278 नौकरी पत्र जारी किए हैं- जिसमें नए सेवानिवृत्त / पहली बार प्रवेश करने वालों को 7,898 नौकरी पत्र शामिल हैं।

मस्कट में एशिया कप के लिए सविता पुनिया बनी भारतीय महिला हॉकी टीम की कप्तान

• गोलकीपर सविता पुनिया मस्कट में आगामी महिला एशिया कप में भारत का नेतृत्व करेंगी क्योंकि हॉकी इंडिया ने इस आयोजन के लिए 18 सदस्यीय टीम का नाम रखा, जिसमें 16 खिलाड़ी शामिल हैं, जिन्होंने टोक्यो ओलंपिक में भाग लिया था। चूंकि नियमित कप्तान रानी रामपाल बेंगलुरु में चोट से उबर रही हैं, इसलिए सविता टूर्नामेंट में टीम की अगुवाई करेंगी, जो 21-28 जनवरी के बीच होने वाला है।

• टेनिस में, असलान करात्सेव ने एंडी मरे को 6-3, 6-3 से हराकर सिडनी टेनिस क्लासिक फाइनल में पुरुषों का एकल खिताब जीता, और अपने तीसरे एटीपी टूर खिताब का दावा किया। महिलाओं के एकल खिताब का दावा स्पेनिश विश्‍व की नौवें नंबर की पाउला बडोसा ने किया, जिन्होंने अपने तीसरे करियर के खिताब पर कब्जा करने के लिए बारबोरा क्रेजीकोवा को 6-3 4-6 7-6 (4) से हराया।

• अडानी ग्रुप की सहायक कंपनी अडानी पावर लिमिटेड (APL) के निदेशक मंडल ने 11 जनवरी 2022 से अडानी पॉवर्स के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी (सीईओ) के रूप में शेरसिंह बी ख्यालिया की नियुक्ति को मंजूरी दी। वह एक चार्टर्ड एकाउंटेंट हैं, जिन्होंने गुजरात पावर कॉरपोरेशन में प्रबंध निदेशक के रूप में कार्य किया है। इससे पहले, ख्यालिया ने गुजरात पावर कॉरपोरेशन में प्रबंध निदेशक के रूप में काम किया है, जहाँ उन्हें अक्षय ऊर्जा क्षेत्र, विशेष रूप से अल्ट्रा मेगा रिन्यूएबल पार्कों के विकास का अनुभव मिला है।

माली के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति इब्राहिम बाउबकर कीता का 76 वर्ष की आयु में निधन

• एक सैन्य तख्तापलट में अपदस्थ किए गए माली के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति इब्राहिम बाउबकर कीता का निधन हो गया है। श्री कीता ने माली पर सितंबर 2013 से सात वर्ष तक शासन किया था, जब तक कि उन्हें अगस्त 2020 में एक सैन्य तख्तापलट में उखाड़ फेंका नहीं गया था। उन्होंने 1994 से 2000 तक देश के प्रधान मंत्री के रूप में भी कार्य किया था। उन्होंने पश्चिम अफ्रीका में लोकतंत्र के लिए एक मॉडल के रूप में माली के सम्मान को बहाल करने का वादा किया था क्योंकि उन्होंने भ्रष्टाचार के लिए "शून्य सहिष्णुता" का वादा करते हुए अपने खंडित देश में एक एकीकृत व्यक्ति के रूप में प्रचार किया था।

पद्म श्री पुरस्कार विजेता, प्रख्यात सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता शांति देवी का ओडिशा में निधन

• गरीबों की आवाज के रूप में याद की जाने वाली ओडिशा की सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता और पद्मश्री से सम्मानित शांति देवी का निधन हो गया है। वह 88 वर्ष की थीं। उन्हें लुगड़ी देवी भी कहा जाता था। वह वंचित समुदाय के प्रति समर्पण और ओडिशा में माओवादी प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में शांति बहाल करने के लिए जानी जाती थीं। उन्हें 9 नवंबर, 2021 को राष्ट्रपति राम नाथ कोविंद से प्रतिष्ठित पद्म श्री पुरस्कार मिला है।

• भारत की नवदीप कौर ने नेवादा, लास वेगास में प्रतिष्ठित मिसेज वर्ल्ड 2022 पेजेंट में सर्वश्रेष्ठ राष्ट्रीय पोशाक का पुरस्कार जीता है। वह मिसेज इंडिया वर्ल्ड 2021 की विजेता हैं, मिसेज वर्ल्ड 2022 में देश का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रही थीं। नवदीप ओडिशा के स्टील सिटी, राउरकेला के पास एक छोटे से शहर से हैं।
