NATIONAL:

Tamil Book Oru Manidhan Oru Iyakkam Kalaignar Mu Karunanidhi released by K Veeramani.

• The book titled ‘Oru Manidhan Oru Iyakkam Kalaignar Mu. Karunanidhi’ in Tamil language . It refers the life and work of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Dravidian Progressive Conference) (DMK) leader Late M Karunanidhi, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister launched by K Veeramani, president of Dravidar Kazhagam in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.The book was first published by Frontline. It is a publication of The Hindu group.

Frontline was an experienced 35 years in journalism. The book includes all the articles published in the special issue – ‘A Man and a Movement,’ It was brought out in August 2018 as a tribute to M Karunanidhi. It was launched one day before the first death anniversary of Late M Karunanidhi.

AGREEMENTS AND MOU'S:

DAC approves the procurement of SDR and NGMMCB.

• The Ministry of Defence got its approval from Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for the procurement of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) and the Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries (NGMMCB) for the Indian Navy.

The meeting was chaired by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This is the first meeting in the second term of the NDA government.

Uses:

NGMMCB: The NGMMCB battery will be fitted with the BrahMos surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missiles.

SDR: The SDR will facilitate high-speed data and secure voice communication with anti-jamming capability. Software Defined Radio was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and the Navy’s Weapons Electronics Systems Engineering Establishment (WESEE).

BrahMos is a joint venture (JV) between the DRDO and the NPOM, a Russian military technology firm, of Russia. It can be launched from air, land and sub-sea against land and marine targets. It has been inducted into the Indian army and Navy

Tripura insurgent group signs peace deal, agrees to lay down arms.

• The National Liberation Front of Twipra insurgent group led by Sabir Kumar signed a peace deal with the Government of India and the Government of Tripura on Saturday. NLFT (SD) agreed to the surrender of its 88 cadres with their weapons. NLFT was responsible for 317 insurgency incidents in which 28 security forces and 62 civilians were killed from 2005-2015.

APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS:

State Bank of India MD Dinesh Kumar Khara got an extension by years after a review of his performance.

• The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Government of India extended the tenure of State Bank of India(SBI) Managing Director (MD)Dinesh Kumar Khara by another 2 years with effect from August 9, 2019.

He is appointed Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI) for a period of three years on August 10, 2016. He holds a Board level position in supervising the businesses of SBI’s nonbanking subsidiaries

He was engaged in diverse financial activities such as Asset Management, Life Insurance, General Insurance, Custodial Services, Primary Dealership,.etc.

He joined SBI as Probationary Officer (PO) and has over 33 years of experience in all sides of Commercial banking such as Retail Credit, deposit mobilization, international banking operations, branch management.

Khara worked in SBI’s Chicago office and was associated with the overseas acquisition of Indian Ocean International Bank Mauritius (now SBI Mauritius) during his stint in Overseas Expansion wing of International Banking Group. He also worked as the MD&CEO of SBI Funds Management Pvt. Limited (SBIMF).
