Books on Param Veer Chakra Awardees launched

A series of five books, for children, illustrative of the story of Param Veer Chakra awardees, was released by the Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar. 'Veergatha' series seeks to introduce the great acts of bravery of the 'Param Veer Chakra' awardees to instill a sense of inspiration and patriotism in children.  The five books being released illustrate saga of bravery of Major Somnath Sharma (1947 war), Major Shaitan Singh (1962 war), CQMH Abdul Hamid (1965 war), Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal (1971 war) and Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey (1999 Kargil war).

About The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) -is India's highest military decoration awarded for the highest degree of valor or self sacrifice in the presence of the enemy. The PVC was established on 26 January 1950 by the President of India, with effect from 15 August 1947. It can be awarded to officers or enlisted personnel from all branches of the Indian military. It is the highest gallantry award of the Government of India after Ashoka Chakra. It replaced the former British colonial Victoria Cross (VC).
