8th Asian Air Gun Championship: Heena Sidhu shoots gold, India cap off on a high

Former world number one Heena Sidhu lived upto the billing as she clinched the gold medal in women's 10m air pistol to cap off India's campaign at the 8th Asian Air Gun Championship on a winning note.India also had the silver medal in the kitty as Shweta Singh stood second on the podium in the day's marquee event, ahead of bronze medallist Seon A Kim of Korea.In her first international final, 

India, thus, won an impressive haul of 17 medals, including six gold (two in individual senior), to finish as toppers in the continental event, which lost some sheen after the pull-out of powerhouse China and Korea's decision to not send numero uno pistol shooter Jin Jong-oh.India bagged five silver and six bronze.

Infosys China CEO Becomes 1st Indian to Get Top Shanghai award

Rangarajan Vellamore, CEO Infosys China, has become the first Indian to receive the Magnolia Gold award in recognition of his contributions to the development of IT industry in Shanghai, China's financial hub. Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong presented the awards at a special function to Rangarajan along with foreign professionals from countries like US, UK, France, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. Rangarajan, 48, who has been residing in east China's Shanghai metropolis for over eight years was earlier awarded Magnolia Silver award in 2011. He hails from Chennai.

UK city of Coventry honours Ratan Tata

Leading Indian industrialist Ratan Tata has been felicitated by the city of Coventry with its highest award in recognition of his contributions to the West Midlands region of central England. The Tata Group Chairman Emeritus took oath as an Honorary Freeman of the City of Coventry, an award only 13 people have been conferred with since 1914. Tata, 77, was honoured alongside Indian-origin professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, founder of the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), at the University of Warwick in Coventry, at a special ceremony at Coventry Cathedral last week. Councillor Michael Hammon. Earlier this year, Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) had reaffirmed its long term commitment to Coventry and the West Midlands with a confirmation of a further 600-million-pound investment to support product creation and advanced vehicle manufacturing. The group is also among key contributors to a new 150-million-pound National Automotive Innovation Centre under construction on the University of Warwick campus. Professor Sir Nigel Thrift, Vice Chancellor of the University of Warwick, said, "Coventry and much of the rest of our region has gained greatly through the vision of these two men. Made in India biggest warship 'INS Kochi' commissioned

India's biggest indigenously built warship, INS Kochi, was commissioned to the Indian Navy here on Wednesday by Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar.Parikkar described the 7,500 tonnes vessel, capable of speeds of 30 knots, to be "as good as any foreign ship".INS Kochi has been built as the second in the series of the three Kolkata-Class (Project 15A) Guided Missile Destroyers at the Mazagon Docks Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai at a cost of Rs.4,000 crore, and joins the Indian Navy fleet as its 10th destroyer.The first of the Kolkata-Class destroyers, INS Kolkata was commissioned in August 2014, while the third and final INS Chennai is due for induction by end-2016.These will be followed by a mega-project of nearly Rs.30,000 crore to construct four more stealth destroyers at the MDL.INS Kochi, designed by the Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design, incorporates major advancements in weapons, sensors and manoeuvring capabilities compared to its forerunner, the Delhi Class.Spanning 164 metres and 17 metres at the beam, it is powered by four gas turbines which can achieve at least 30 knots speed.The warship comes armed with a wide range of state-of-the-art weapons like a vertical launch missile system for long distance engagement of shore and sea-based targets.It is only the second Indian Naval warship to have a Multi-Function Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF-STAR) which provide target data to Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile systems (LR-SAM).The MF-STAR and LR-SAM have been jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd.To protect itself from incoming air-borne or surface attacks at medium and close range, the ship has been fitted with 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount, AK630 Close In Weapon System, BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, indigenous rocket launchers (IRL), indigenous twin-tube torpedo launchers and bow-mounted new generation HUMSA Sonar Dome.It can also operate two Sea King or Chetak helicopters on board and accommodate 40 officers and 350 sailors.

K.N. Tripathi sworn in Tripura governor

Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta administered the oath of office to Tripathi, 80, at the Durbar Hall in Raj Bhavan . Acting Chief Minister Aghore Debbarma, his cabinet colleagues, legislators and leaders of various political parties and top security and civil officials were present at the brief swearing-in ceremony.Tripura Chief Secretary Y.P. Singh conducted the programme.Earlier in the day, on his arrival from Kolkata, Tripathi was received at the airport by the chief secretary, Director General of Police K. Nagaraj and top officials.Tripathi took the additional charge of Tripura's gubernatorial post as the state's incumbent governor Tathagata Roy has gone to meet his daughter in the US.President Pranab Mukherjee on September 24 approved Roy's one month leave and asked Tripathi to discharge additional duties.Tripathi practised as a lawyer in the Allahabad High Court from 1956 till 2014 except for the three times when he was speaker of the Uttar Pradesh assembly -- in 1991, 1997 and 2002.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu launches railway knowledge portal

In line with the 'Digital India', a knowledge portal for dissemination of detailed information on Indian Railways was launched  by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Indian Railway Knowledge Portal which is accessible at(www.kportal.indianrailways.gov.in), is an initiative of the National Academy of Indian Railways and has aggregated most of the available knowledge about Indian Railways at one location by linking websites, documents for dissemination of knowledge on the public transporter."Globally it is accepted that we live in a knowledge economy which is driven by knowledge. No sector today can be away from the knowledge resources," Prabhu said.

He also pointed out that it is desirable that the knowledge about Railway systems does not remain confined to a few select, but all the enthusiasts, researchers, academicians.He further said that we need to share best practises and innovations. This portal will be a comprehensive holistic platform as a 'one stop arrangement' for everyone interested in Indian Railways in particular and Railways in general.It has e-access to existing libraries of Railways, and all the libraries are being clustered to have a single interface through e-Granthalaya by NIC.The Knowledge Portal Home Page also gives a brief of all the social media activities of the Indian Railway sites.Besides the portal has web pages on fan clubs, heritage, and rail museums across the world.

India, Japan, U.S. discuss maritime security in trilateral meet

Foreign Ministers of India, the United States and Japan met on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly and highlighted the growing convergence of their respective interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Japan Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida also decided to meet again in the new format, raising the ongoing official level engagement to a political one.The three Ministers discussed maintaining maritime security through greater collaboration and appreciated Japan’s participation in the 2015 Malabar naval exercise. Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief also featured in the first trilateral ministerial meet.

The award carries a cash reward of 5 lakh rupees, a citation, a trophy and a shawl. Prabhakar Jog had worked as music composer, music coordinator and violinist with many renowned music directors of old time including Madanmohan, S.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Shankar-Jaikishan, O.P.Nayyar, Usha Khanna, Khayyam, Ravindra Jain, Jaidev.

Prabhakar Jog was born in Haregaon, Maharashtra on December 25, 1932. He took lessons in classical vocal music from Pt. Gajananrao Joshi and Pt. Narayanrao Marulkar for 5-6 years. Prabhakar Jog got his first break as a violinist for a marathi film Shri Gurudevdatta.  He played an integral part in the creation of Geet Ramayana series with Mr. Sudhir Phadke. Geet Ramayana was written by Mr. G.D. Madgulkar and music was composed by Mr. Sudhir Phadke. It was a prestigious milestone of Akashwani Pune Kendra. He also composed music pieces for more than 40 songs in Geet Ramayana series.

Lata Mangeshkar Award--The Lata Mangeshkar Award is a national-level award instituted to honour works in the field of music. Various State Governments of India presents Lata Mangeshkar Award. The State Government of Madhya Pradesh started Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1984. The award consists of a certificate of merit and a cash prize. Dr. Jacob Tsimerman wins 2015 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize

The 2015 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize will be awarded to Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto, Canada. The prize will be awarded during the International Conference on Number Theory at SASTRA University in Tamil Nadu’s Kumbakonam (Ramanujan’s hometown) where the prize has been given annually.The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize was established in 2005 and is awarded annually for outstanding contributions by young mathematicians to areas influenced by the mathematics genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. The age limit for the prize has been set at 32 because Ramanujan achieved so much in his brief life of 32 years.

The 2014 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize was awarded to Dr. James Maynard, a 27 year old mathematician from Oxford University who specializes in number theory. Previous winners of the prize are Manjul Bhargava and Kannan Soundararajan in 2005 (two full prizes), Terence Tao in 2006, Ben Green in 2007, Akshay Venkatesh in 2008, Kathrin Bringmann in 2009, Wei Zhang in 2010, Roman Holowinsky in 2011, Zhiwei Yun in 2012, and Peter Scholze in 2013.
