Scientists find material that can withstand 4000 degrees Celsius
Scientists have identified materials that can withstand temperatures of nearly 4,000 degrees Celsius.
● It may pave the way for improved heat resistant shielding for the faster-than-ever hypersonic space vehicles.
● Researchers from Imperial College London in the UK discovered that the melting point of hafnium carbide is the highest ever recorded for a material.
● Tantalum carbide (TaC) and hafnium carbide (HfC) are refractory ceramics, meaning they are extraordinarily resistant to heat.
● Their ability to withstand extremely harsh environments means that refractory ceramics could be used in thermal protection systems on high-speed vehicles and as fuel cladding in the super-heated environments of nuclear reactors.
● However, there has not been the technology available to test the melting point of TaC and HfC in the lab to determine how truly extreme an environment they could function in.
वैज्ञानिकों ने अब तक का सबसे ज्यादा ताप सहने वाला पदार्थ खोज निकाला है।
● तकरीबन 4000 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक के तापमान में भी नहीं पिघलने वाले इस पदार्थ की मदद से सर्वाधिक तेज गति से चलने वाले अंतरिक्ष यान बनाना संभव हो सकता है।
● इंपीरियल कॉलेज लंदन के शोधकर्ताओं ने इस विलक्षण पदार्थ की खोज की है।
● शोधकर्ताओं के मुताबिक, टेंटेलम कार्बाइड और हाफनियम कार्बाइड बहुत उच्च तापमान सहने में सक्षम होते हैं। इनमें हाफनियम कार्बाइड अब तक ज्ञात सर्वाधिक ताप सहने वाला पदार्थ है।
● प्रयोग के दौरान वैज्ञानिकों ने खास लेजर के जरिये इन दोनों पदार्थो का गलनांक जांचा। गलनांक वह तापमान होता है, जिस पर कोई पदार्थ पिघल जाता है।
● शोध में पाया गया कि टेंटेलम कार्बाइड और हाफनियम कार्बाइड को संयुक्त रूप से मिलाने पर इनका गलनांक 3,905 डिग्री सेल्सियस है।
● वहीं अकेले टेंटेलम कार्बाइड का गलनांक 3,768 डिग्री सेल्सियस और हाफनियम कार्बाइड का तापमान 3,958 डिग्री सेल्सियस पाया गया।
● कॉलेज के एसोसिएट प्रोफेसर उमर सेडिलस बराजा ने कहा, ‘हाइपरसोनिक गति से अंतरिक्ष यान जब वायुमंडल में प्रवेश करता है, तब बहुत अधिक तापमान पैदा होता है।
