i think the word 'afforded' could also be used as this means the event managed to give him an additional opportunity.

Not sure what really drives your answers in this test. Do we need to look for actual errors or just make the sentence better ???

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the following questions, some of the sentences have errors and some are correct. Find out which part of a sentence has an error. If a sentence is free from errors, mark your answer (D).

The distinguished visitor said that he had great pleasure to be with us for some time (A)/ and that the pleasure was all the greater (B)/ because his visit afforded him an opportunity to study the working of an institution of such eminence as ours. (C) / No Error (D)

Options:
A)

(A)

B)

(B)

C)

(C)

D)

(D)

Solution:

Ans:(c) Use 'offered' in place of 'afforded'. 'Afford' means to have enough money or time to be able to buy or to do something whereas 'offer' means to provide the opportunity for something'.
