Ans should be c

Question:
If roots of the equation λ2+8λ+μ2+6μ =0 are real and equal , then \(\mu\) will be :
Options:
A) -2 and 8
B) -3 and 6
C) -8 and 2
D) -6 and 3
Solution:
Ans: (c)

The given equation is

\(\lambda^2+8\lambda+\mu^2+6\mu\) = 0

Since, the roots are real and equal

b2 - 4ac=0

82 - 4 (\(\mu^2+6\mu\)) = 0

64 - 4 (\(\mu^2+6\mu\))= 0

16 - (\(\mu^2+6\mu\)) = 0

\(\mu^2\) + 6\(\mu\) - 16 = 0

\(\mu^2\) + 8\(\mu\) - 2\(\mu\) - 16 = 0

\(\mu\) (\(\mu\) + 8) - 2 (\(\mu\) + 8) = 0

(\(\mu\) - 2) =0, (\(\mu\) + 8) = 0

\(\therefore\) \(\mu\) = - 8 and 2.
