"They begin together" means A+B both working together..their combined efficiencies will be 5 units. Please correct it

Question:

A can do a piece of work in 14 days which B can do in 21 days. They begin together but 3 days before the completion of the work, A leaves off. The total number of days to complete the work is

Options:
A)

635    days

B)

812    days

C)

1015    days

D)

1312    days

Solution:

Ans: (c)

LCM(14,21)=42.
Let total work is 42 units where
work done by A in 1 day =\(\frac{42}{14}\) = =4214=3 units
work done by B in 1 day =\(\frac{42}{21}\) = 2=4221=2 units

A and B together can do 3+2=5 units of work in 1 day. Since they worked together for 7 days, 5×7=35 units of work gets completed.
Remaining work =4235=7 units
B can complete this remaining work in 72=3.5 days.
Required days =7+3.5=10.5
