Question:
The ratio between the length and breath of a room is 5:3 The cost of white washing the ceiling of the room at 50 P per square m is \(\unicode{x20B9} \)270 and the cost of painting the walls at 10 P per square metre is \(\unicode{x20B9} \) 48. The height of the room is:
Options:
A) 6 m
B) 8 m
C) 5 m
D) 10 m
Solution:
Area of ceiling = \(\cfrac{Total cost}{cost of 1 sq.unit}\)

\(=\cfrac{270}{0.5}\) = 540 sq. m

Now since l: b = 5x: 3x

⇒ l × b = 15x2 = 540 m2

⇒ l =30 and b = 18m

Now, Area of the 4 wails = \(\cfrac{Total cost}{cost of 1 sq.unit}\)     \(\cfrac{48}{0.1}\) = 480 m2

∴ Height = \(\cfrac{480}{2(30 + 18)}= 5 m.\)
