Question:
A milk seller pays \(\unicode{x20B9} \)10,000 per kilo litre for his milk. He adds water to it and sells the mixture at \(\unicode{x20B9} \)11.20 a litre thereby making 40 percent profit. Find the proportion of water to milk which his customer receive.
Options:
A) 1 : 3
B) 1 : 2
C) 1 : 4
D) 1 : 8
Solution:

C.P. of milk =   \(\cfrac{10000}{1000}\)   =10 a liter

C.P. of mixture = 11.20\(\times\)  \(\cfrac{100}{140}\)  = 8 a liter

C.P. of water = 0 a liter

\(\therefore \) \(\cfrac{water}{milk}=\cfrac{1}{10-8}\times\cfrac{8-0}{1}=\cfrac{4}{1}\)

\(\Rightarrow\)  water : milk = 1: 4
