in every solution you are assuming that in taking 'y' from mixture only water (and not wine) would be taken off.. howcome thats even possible!

Question:

A barrel contains a mixture of wine and water in the ratio 3 : 1. How much fraction of the mixture must be drawn off and substituted by water so that the ratio of wine and water in the resultant mixture in the barrel becomes 1 : 1 ?

Options:
A)

14

B)

13

C)

34

D)

23

Solution:

RATIO PLAYS AN IMP ROLE IN THE MIXTURES! HOW CAN WE NOT TAKE THAT INTO ACCOUNT? IF 12L IS DRAWN FOR EG FROM THE ABOVE THEN 9L WILL BE OF WINE AND 3L OF WATER. THEY HAVE COMPLETELY IGNORED THE AMOUNT DRAWN. KINDLY CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG!!
