to compensate the voltage drop and to maintain a constant voltage at the receiving end side we have to employ series capacitors. shunt capacitors and other +ve reactive power injection devices( like,- synchronus motor) are connected in parallel to compensate reactive power of the line, and they improve the power factor at the consumer end as well.. answer should be a 'series capacitor' as far as the question is concerned....
