Question:
The sum of the ages of two men is 85 years. Five years ago, the difference between their ages was 1/9 of the present age of the elder one. The elder's present age is–
Options:
A) 55 years
B) 45 years
C) 42.5 years
D) 47.5 years
Solution:

Ans: (b) Let age of elder person = x years

Then age of younger person = (85 – x) years

ATQ,

(x – 5) – (85 – x – 5) =\(\cfrac{1}{9}\) x.

x – 5 – 80 + x =\(\cfrac{1}{9}\) x.

2x – 85 = \(\cfrac{1}{9}\) x.

2x – \(\cfrac{1}{9}\) x = 85

\(\cfrac{17}{9}\) x = 85

x = \(\cfrac{85×9}{17}\)  = 45 years

So, present age of elder person = 45 years
