Correct answer is 20 years.

Question:

When the average age of a couple and their son was 36 years, the son married and got a child after three year. When the child was 9 years old, the average age of the family became 37 years. What was the age of daughter-in-law at the time of their marriage?

Options:

23 years

20 years

25 years

30 years

Solution:

Let the age of daughter-in-law before 3 years of marriage = $x$ -3

Total age of couple and son at marriage = $36×3=108$

After 12 year every member’s age will have been increased by 12 years and son’s age is 9 year so

Total age after 12 years = $108+x+12×4+9=165+x$

Average age of family = $\frac{165+x}{5} =37$

$165+x=185 ⇒ x=20 years$

Daughter in Law age at marriage = 20+3=23 years
