You yourself said that "Statistics is singular" to which the universe agrees 100%
So, why would you use Indicates for a singular thing
Let me give you an example where indicates can be used suitably and comfortably
The cluster of words indicates the following meaning.
Here I am not talking about a single word, but rather the cluster of words
