why length of train is considered???? (Question: 259921.0 )

time of crossing platform is given with respect to passenger not with train plz explain....???

Question:

A passenger sitting in a train of length 520 m, which is running at a speed of 80 km/h crossing two platforms. He notices that he crosses the first platform and second platform in time interval which are in the ratio of 8 : 5 respectively. If the length of first platform is 1040 m.
