why 47+1 ? (Question: 400446.0 )

why we have to add +1 into 47. i mean there are now 47 students , shouldn't we just substract from 47 students!!

Question:
In a class of 45 students, a boy is ranked 20th. When two boys joined, his rank was dropped by one. What is his new rank from the end ?
Options:
A) 25th
B) 26th
C) 27th
D) 28th
Solution:
Ans: (c)

boy's initial rank from starting=20

his rank was dropped by one,

so, his new rank from starting =20+1=21

therefore, his new rank from the end = (47-21)+1=27(Since two new student have joined)

Total students = 47
As his rank is 21 in 47 students , this means there are still 26 students behind him.
So counting from backwards, his rank = 26+1= 27.
