where is the ratio 3:2

Question:

Two vessels are full of milk with milk-water ratio 1 : 3 and 3 : 5 respectively. If both are mixed in the ratio 3 : 2, what is the ratio of milk and water in the new mixture ?

Options:
A)

4 : 15

B)

3 : 7

C)

6 : 7

D)

None of the above

Solution:

Ans: (b) Milk in 1st mixture = \(\cfrac{1}{4}\)

Water in 1st mixture = \(\cfrac{3}{4}\)

Milk in 2nd mixture = \(\cfrac{3}{8}\)

Water in 2nd mixture = \(\cfrac{5}{8}\)

If both are mixed in the ratio 3 : 2, then Milk : Water in final mixture

= 3 × \(\cfrac{1}{4}\) + 2 × \(\cfrac{3}{8}\) : 3 × \(\cfrac{3}{4}\) + 2 × \(\cfrac{5}{8}\)

= \(\cfrac{3}{4}+\cfrac{6}{8}\) : \(\cfrac{9}{4}+\cfrac{10}{8}\)

= \(\cfrac{12}{8} : \cfrac{28}{8}\)

= 12 : 28

= 3 : 7
