in this que how did we assumed the values of a,b ?

Question:
A three digit number has the average of its digits as 7. Its middle digit equals the average of its other two digits. How many values can it assume?
Options:
A) 6
B) 4
C) 5
D) 7
Solution:

Ans (c)

Let the number be denoted by (100a + 10b + c).

\(\cfrac{(a+b+c)}{3}\)    = 7 …(1)

b = (a+c)/2

a + c = 2b

(1) a + c + b =21

2b + b = 21

b = 7

∴ a + c = 14

∴ (a, b) = (5, 9) or (6, 8) or (7,7) or (8, 6) or (9, 5)

∴ abc = 579 or 678 or 777 or 876 or 975

It has five possibilities.
