Question:

Some amount is divided among A, B, & C in the ratio x : 2x + 1 : x+ 2. The share of C exceeds that of A by Rs. 280 and share of B exceeds that of C by Rs. 420. Find the share of A, if the same amount is divided among them in the ratio x : 2x + 1 : x + 2, but this time the shares of B & C are equal.

Options:
A) Rs. 380
B) Rs. 760
C) Rs. 570
D) None of these
Solution:

Ans: (a) Let the shares of A, B & C be kx, k(2x + 1) & k(x + 2) respectively in rupees.

From the given data,

⇒ k (x + 2) – kx = 280

⇒ 2k =280

⇒ k = 140

Also given

⇒ k (2x + 1) – k (x + 2) = 420

⇒ 140 (x  1) = 420

⇒ x – 1 = 3

⇒ x = 4

Total amount distributed

= kx + k (2 x + 1) + k (x + 2)

⇒ k (4x + 3) = 140(4 x 4 + 3) = 2660

In the second case, we have

⇒ 2x + 1 = x+ 2

⇒ x = 1

Then the ratio in which 2660 is divided among A, B & C in the second case = 1:3:3

Required share of A is = \(\cfrac{1}{1+3+3}\)  × 2660 = Rs. 380
